Smash, Grab, Repeat
Torchlight was amusing for the first few levels, but in the end I got frustrated by the lack of variety: monsters are the same things reskinned and leveled up, environments pop up over and over, even the looting got a bit dull in the end when high level monsters dropped worse gear than their early level counterparts. There's a certain satisfaction to the easy combat skills and gear upgrading, with decent (though again, repetitive) music and nice visuals. Being able to use your "pet" character to make runs back out of the dungeon was very useful (and much appreciated when the loot started piling up). I did battle through to the end, but it felt like a slog for not much reward. I didn't fancy going back for more post-credits Ember hunting. The story might as well be absent for all the impression it left on me. Good if you love a bit of dungeon crawling, but this game just wasn't quite what I'd hoped for.
