Great overhall staying to its Origins

As the Title says, the new Visuals are really great, being inspired by the Model of the Cutscenes. The new Textures and added 3D Models for Plants, Objects and Details on Walls are implemented very well. Gameplaywise you can chose between the original and a more modern Control Scheme, i personally like the original Control Scheme, when learned, they give you a very good and rewarding Control over Lara. It just feels good shooting around in a very acrobatic Way or mastering the Level in such Way. As i recently played through the original TR1 and 2, i started here with the golden Mask and that alone took me around 7 Hours. Guessing from the percentage on the Archivment, i am one of the first to do so^^ The Framerate from the original Games feels sometimes a bit too stuttery, as i have very fresh Memory of the Games and also tested in on original Win98 Hardware, i don't think that my Brain is tricking me here while changing from the new to the old Graphics and its lower FPS. There seem also to be some other minor Issues, the "Crystal Key" on a Level in the Golden Mask in the Water wasn't visible with the new Graphics, TR2 has no Background in the Item Menu and there is no nice Way to make Screenshots at the Moment. But nothing Gamebreaking and you get a lot of Content with very nicely done Visuals for your Money. Netherless, for playing solely the originals, i would suggest Openlara or the 16:9 Patches for the other Games, as they seem to run better (at the Moment). A little Tip: Add -nolegal as starting Condition. It not only takes away the annoying and nonsenical Warnings, but also the Logos, you'll be instantly in the Game Menu to start your Journey!

Amazing remasters but not perfect yet...

So i want to start by saying that i did not play those games before even though i did bought them on gog a while ago but when i heard remasters where comming i then waited. But well now i did finished TR1 and TR2 as well as putting a good amount of time into Unfinished Buisness, The Golden mask and The Last Artifact expansions and also TR3. I really enjoyed my time with those games so much so that it was almost the only games i was playing for a week straight :) But i have some criticism of course... Well first of all, yes the controls are really something to get used to and i did though (I play on keyboard btw because it just feels more natural to me and i just can't do without the hotkeys especially f5 to save and f9 to load since you have to do it a ton in those games since there is literally no autosaves since it wasn't a thing at all at that time from my understanding but yeah) I play on tank controls because the new modern controls are really weird and also those games where literally designed around the tank controls with the grid system with the blocks and all so it is the way to go. But they could definitely do a better job with the modern controls none the less imo. Although something i hope they fix is the camera which you can't move in tank controls when you play on mnk but you can with a controller. Also there was mods on the originals to get mouse camera movements and on modern controls it works. It is especially annoying because the default camera which is the same as the original is kinda terrible and i know almost if not all third person games in the 90's had awful cameras but still, couple that with human ennemies in TR2 especially (or the atlanteans mutans in TR1) that have way to much health and corner you a lot and it gets really annoying really fast. There are some graphical glitches here and there but nothing major. Also literally no graphics settings whatsoever on pc, what are we doing here. But yeah overall awesome remasters !

Modern controls do not work

I was hoping to play these classic TR games with the Modern controls, which I read on the developer's website are the Tomb Raider Legend controls. Unfortunately they are not the same. Target lock-on frequently breaks, there is no side-step or back-step, and I couldn't get side-flip or swan dive to work like in Legend. Training course in TR2 cannot be completed since you cannot hold a gun, and that is required for the side-flip. I think the developers of Tomb Raider Anniversary had the right idea instead; if you are going to put modern controls in an old game, the old game must be recreated to implement the modern controls properly. A big thank you to GOG for refunding my purchase quickly and hassle-free. Very much appreciated.

Modern controls are broken

Firstly, huge classic TR fan going on two decades. I can soar with the tank controls. Everything goes great with the modern controls (after googling all of the unintuitive mappings that should have been supplied in a tutorial or at least a digital manual), until you start trying to swim. She only moves in water using the left analog stick and the angle is completely dependent on the camera angle, and the camera stops responding or "gets stuck" on a wall in tight areas of which there are many. Meaning Lara just runs into a wall and drowns because you can't move the camera. Sometimes you can press the right analog stick to go into "look" mode and then press it again to reset the camera angle somewhat, but it does not always help. Additionally, when you are climbing up ledges, it is as if the analog stick is interpreting only four directions. It is unpredictable as to which direction you will have to press to climb upward, which was never a problem in TR LAU. The classic graphics are the PC version graphics with no filtering. There's no graphics options for either classic/modern graphics, so you get what you get. This remaster needed more time to bake. I suppose that's just the way games get released nowadays.

A commendable remaster

The remaster is a bit of a mixed bag, but worth getting for fans. You can seamlessly switch between the 3 games from the main menu. During gameplay, you can switch on the fly between the original and the remastered graphics, by pressing F1; you can also switch between the modern and tank controls while playing as well. One downside is that there are no graphics options; you can play the game in borderless fullscreen, or switch to windowed mode. The remastered FMVs are not that great; they are too blurry, and some of them are too dark, to the point where you cannot really see much of anything. Modders have actually done better jobs at upscaling the original ones. The new visuals are pretty nice, though they are nothing special; there are new textures, new models, new foliage, new lightning, and the old environmental sprites have been replaced by 3D models. Some level art has been slightly changed, but not by much and the layout of the levels has been preserved (for example, in some cases you'll see an open ceiling with light coming through instead of a closed one). Graphic mods for the original games will net you similar or better results. In addition, if you use an RTX remix mod as well (only if you have a supported Nvidia GPU), you will also get superior lightning, which can result in a vastly improved visual experience. The modern controls are fairly bad. They don't work well at all with the game's grid based system. You cannot jump back by tapping backwards; you cannot do a back flip (technically, you can if keep a button pressed to have your weapons drawn, but it still prevents you from doing more complex platforming). Positioning Lara in front of objects is also a pain, because she automatically turns to her side when she reaches a wall. She also has a habit of getting stuck in environments after interacting with objects, like levers. Thankfully, all is right in the world when you're using the original (tank) controls, and Lara controls like a dream.
