Tomb Raider is a game that needs no introduction but if, for some reason, you are not familiar with the series, then these games are about the adventures of the beautiful, intelligent, and athletic British archaeologist Lara Croft. You might think that this job is mostly digging holes and dusting old bones. How could a game about that possibly be fun? Well, Lara Croft is anything but an ordinary archaeologist and her life is anything but boring. Lara Croft, tomb raider, occupies an interesting niche between Indiana Jones and Bayonetta: she’s a relic hunter who can kick butt and take names with the best of them.
When Lara ventures into ancient tombs in search for legendary treasures and forgotten knowledge, she must keep in mind that those responsible for safeguarding those artifacts didn’t leave them unguarded. The tombs are filled with deadly traps, bizarre monsters, and clever puzzles. Lara is not all looks, though, so she’s ready for the dangers that await. At her disposal is an arsenal of weapons from twin pistols, through all kinds of machine guns and assault rifles, all the way to grenade launchers and bazookas.
In the first game, Lara seeks a powerful artifact--the Scion--that seems to be the key to finding the mythical island of Atlantis. In the second game of the series our sexy archaeologist follows the trial of the mystical Dagger of Xian, which is a weapon used by the first Emperor of China, and it is said that by plunging the dagger into one's heart, the bearer turns into a dragon. The third part features non-linear gameplay, meaning you can choose not only the way in which you complete a level, but also your next destination in the story. Here, you fight against an evil corrupt corporation--RX Tech-- that has come into possession of a strange meteorite apparently imbued with unique properties.
Fans of action platformers, great stories, and timeless classics: good news! You don’t have to plunder any long-forgotten crypts to pick up the phenomenal Tomb Raider games: get them here on GOG.com instead.
These first three TR games are the ones that every gamer must play if they're to get any idea of the popularity that the Lara Croft character had in the mid-to-late 1990s. It's star rose and fell with them, because after the third instalment, the Tomb Raider games just weren't as good anymore (Angel of Darkness being a prime example of that).
On playing them, you'll understand why many are quite purist about them, and why the reboots of later years never really took hold. Legend and Anniversary just weren't the same. Even the new rebooted game can't match the power of these originals (many have called that one a reworked Uncharted anyway).
So download these games, and enjoy Tomb Raider when it was at it's best.
Great games of their time, I had a blast revisiting TR1 with this pack. 5/5 rating for that one. I wasn't able to get it running on my Windows 7 desktop (wouldn't even load), however, and had to use my Windows 10 laptop to get it working. Cinematics were at the lowest quality, but it wasn't like it took away from the fun.
TR2 had some major problems with glitches. I couldn't get it to work on my laptop, but it worked on my desktop (oddly the opposite problem I had with TR1). Also, I had to do some research on fixing the gamepad I was using to get that working. There are some glitches throughout the game, falling through the graphics and whatnot, which I don't remember encountering when playing it on PS1. Overall, it was a difficult experience, and not quite as enjoyable as I remember back in my childhood. It's severely flawed in comparison to the first, a lot harder, and while level design starts out strong it does become bland and monotonous to trudge through as you progress. I'd rate it 3.5/5.
TR3 had even more problems. The sound wasn't working, so I had to do something about that. Only worked on my desktop, same as TR2. As far as the game goes, I remember not exactly loving it back in the day due to some really poor design choices and camera problems (yes, even worse than TR2). It's virtually unplayable in some areas, and I swear it has to be due to bugs because watching walkthroughs on youtube, things just don't seem to be working the way they are supposed to. If you play this one, expect to use cheats. 2.5/5.
If your PS1 isn't working anymore and you want to revisit these, it's probably worth it overall. Don't expect a smooth process though, and simply enjoy the experience for what it is: nostalgia.
TR2 is without doubt the best game in the series (TR4 and TR3 very close)
The athmosfere and the exploration are still the same as they were
The game has that old scheme of control (tank) which I understand may not be well received by players who didn't play these games back then
I understand why modern gamer may not like this... but if you were born in the 70s or in the 80s, then this is one of the best classics around
DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU RUN WINDOWS 10. Tomb Raider #2 doesn't run. #1, bugs out on me in the dosbox emulator, and I haven't even gotten into #3 yet.
When you run 2, it shows in your applications, but it doesn't make a window or appear anywhere. Way to fail GOG....
Anyways, avoid this purchase if you're on Windows 10.
The Square Enix-produced TR games are fantastic actio-adventure games, but this original trilogy is something more. The grid-based graphics make Tomb Raider 1-2-3 into puzzle games as much as action games. You will stop, look around, and use logic and mathematics to figure out how to get from point a to point b. Lara can jump one square from a standstill, 1.5 from a running start, and 2 if she can hang from a ledge on the other side. This adds a whole different dimension to the way You play these original games. It's something I miss in today's TR games. Prepare for a challenge and for sense of adventure and discovery that you have not ever experienced if you have never played these games. bravo, GOG. thanks for a fantastic addition. Now let's get Final Fantasy VII on here.
