If you like to move slowly and do not care much about facing your enemies straight on this is game just for you. It has always been my favourite game. Great story, great ambient and after all...you are playing as greatest thief world has NEVER seen :)
One of the most engaging stealth games I ever played.
Really very atmospheric and engrossing!
The sounds, sneaking, combat, story, characters, everything is on par..
Sure it's a little dated by today's standards, but at the time, absolutely ground breaking.
It can be a difficult game, but it's never unfair, there's always multiple avenues to accomplish your goals.
Intro
(Note: 253 playtime hours on Steam)
This game blew my mind multiple times on multiple playthroughs. THIS is why playing games is my hobby. I had this game for a couple of years but could never get into it. Eventually I decided to keep going no matter what. By the third level
I knew this game was something special. This was only in 2015 so no nostalgia attatched. Thief the Dark Project's world is so incredibly presented through it's unparalleled atmosphere and world-building, memorable characters,
brilliant writing, kick♥♥♥♥♥anti-hero, incredibly impressive audio design and level design that will blow you harder than Mia Khalifa. There are no other games comparable to the Thief series (besides the almighty Deus Ex). The pinnacle
of video games in just about every concievable way.
The Great:
++Easily the greatest sound design in video games, it's so good it's even a main part of gameplay
++A narrative so original and well told it leaves every other first-person game from 1999 and before in its dust
++A unique, fleshed out world told through its level design, witty dialogue and interesting stuff to read
++Gameplay so incredibly fun and innovative it makes you wonder how Half-Life could ever be considered even remotely original
++Due to the largeness and utter depth of each and every level, replayability is incredibly high despite there not even being any multiplayer
++Thief's world, the 'City' is finely crafted every corner explored is a joy
++Stealth is the most enjoyable I've ever experienced by far. Immersion is at an all time high here.
++This game spews innovation in large quantities
++Very long game with tons and tons of stuff to explore
++Again with the atmosphere. It's simply unmatched in anything I've ever experienced.
++Level design is, again, totally unparalelled with fantastic pacing and mission variety
The Good:
+Characters in this game are truly amazing and the villian is terrifying
+AI and the diversity of enemies are all a joy to fight or sneak around
+Garrett's arsenal of weapons are creative and every one of them useful. No problem Dishonored, you can steal every one of them
+Graphics are great for the most part
+Great use of difficulty put to work here, but don't do Normal or you'll potentially be missing out on half the game
+The physics are awesome and pretty innovative
+Movement works beautifully for its stealth gameplay and makes traversal interesting
+Eric Brosius' soundtrack is incredible
The Okay/Not Too Big of a Deal:
+-The graphics are rarely uneven. There are at times some truly terrible texture work, but 95% of the time it looks pretty damn great and compares with the best of the year.
-+Runs like crap on modern systems, that is, if you can even get it to run. Not its fault though, really. This is the same for a large majority of games of the time. TFix exists for a reason.
+-You may hate some levels at first, but I'm sure that after every replay you'll learn to love them
The Bad:
-N/A
The Horrible:

Sound: 10/10

Conclusion
I can't find a bad thing to say about this game. I simply cannot. Thief is uncomparable to anything within the industry. I don't use the word lightly, but Thief the Dark Project and it's Gold version are simply masterpieces.
The second best game of all goddamn time. Half-Life? Ocarina of Time? Not even close.
