This is one of the best stealth games ever. The linear story is fantastic, the atmosphere and music along with fun and exciting gameplay makes it a winner. Not to mention the active community of fan made missions.
The stealth is finicky at best, the combat is bad, the movement is bad, and theres so much inconsistent stuff it almost leads me to believe this game has hidden RNG mechanics. Sometimes enemies will hear you from the other room while you are sneaking and other times you can practically sprint up behind them without being detected. There are also traps on some missions which can only be triggered by the player even though they are just pressure plate traps.
The lighting engine is also bad. This is esp a problem as one of the core game mechanics is built around the lighting system. If you are "in the light" you are much easier to be seen vs "in the dark." Problem is, sometimes very dark areas are considered "light" and lighter areas are considered "dark." There are even areas with the same level of light, in direct view of or even right next to each other, which are not treated as the same light level by the game.
Do not bother with this game, just find a more modern stealth game. This genere is one of my favorites of all time. Even lots of the Assassins Creed games others didnt like I still somewhat enjoyed just because I like stealth mechanics. But Thief was so tedius, frustrating, and poorly executed that I could not enjoy it. From what Ive seen in later games they got the execution much better overall
I'm writing this on the same day I've completed the game for the first time, and as someone who was not even alive at the time this game had come out. Thief is A wild and imaginative title from the late 1990's. It's not perfect, the combat and controls are clunky and somewhat unimpactful, but is had so many intresting things about it. The mixture of Fantasy and Steampunk, the way it encouraged me to think and plan my next move, the simple yet intriguing story, the voice acting, the Triumphant conclusion.
The only bad thing I can say about is that for first time players like myself, you will almost certainly need a walkthrough or a guide in order to complete some levels, but the ones you complete on your own feel so rewarding.
Thief was an amazing experience for me, and I'm looking forward to playing The Metal Age next.
This is still one of the best games ever, and the Gold Edition is somewhat rare so this is excellent news to see it here. I will no doubt buy it again, even though I have the retail discs in excellent condition :-)
This has been one of my favourite games of all time before Half-Life 2 rolled around. And even then, it's still up there in my top 5. I'm super excited to finally play it again on a modern computer, and have it work as it's supposed to. Thank you, and thank you again, GOG!
