Every bit as definitive as Half Life.

Thief: The Dark Project stands beside Half Life as the most influential 'FPS' ('First Person Shooter') titles ever made. DOOM and Quake were the birth of the genre, but Thief and Half Life were where the fps genre grew wings. In a time when we are besieged by FPS titles focused heavily on merging ultra-violence with tomorrow's technology, Thief is the exact opposite. This is, like Half Life, a game all about it's story, it's protagonist, and it's utterly enthralling world. Looking Glass Studios didn't have 7.1 surround sound to work with. Nor did they have HDR lighting - or even Bloom! - but my gods they made atmosphere anyway. They turned the footsteps and mutter of an approaching guard into something that made your blood run cold for a moment. They turned the moaning shamble of a zombie into something that genuinely inspired fight or flight. This wasn't merely the 'Amnesia' of it's day: it's the game that inspired every pulse-pounding, nerve-racking, 'crouching in the shadows praying' moment in every title that followed it. Thief Gold isn't merely a Good Old Game: it's one of the landmarks in gaming history. Absolutely every gamer should own this game and it's equally brilliant sequels.

First best and most sneaky stealth FPS

I had my doubts about this game ever accepting newer versions of Windows. I've spent years buying Gold versions on CD to replace my old original version of this game, and trying to fiddle around with fixes, patches and hacks. Everything I could find to make this golden oldy back to life. It seems a wizard is hiding out behind the scenes at gog.com. I have just completed the tutorial of Thief and it works perfectly. The sound, graphics and cut scenes. And on Win7 64bit to boot. Bravo! The game takes place in a Steampunk inspired world that have both magic and technology, but both in a primitive way. You play as the thief Garrett, who is sort of like Robin Hood. You steal from the rich and have no qualms about subduing hired guards. The innocent, like servents, pets or even the lady of the house, is another matter. Never harm the defenseless. During your... Nightly activities you come across a woman who hires you to steal a magic sword for her. Nice, easy and quickly done, for someone of your talents... Right? Buy this game for the story and the awesome way it makes you feel when your "working." Them drunken guards wont know what... snuck past them.

A Taffing Good Time (SPOILERS!!!!)

This is a game that demands your time and focus. Levels are massive, extremely detailed, and dark. The added missions in this version are quite good and help balance out a game that has a heaveir supernatural element to it than its predecessor. Yep, It's a stealth game. It's not hard to know what that means. I'm sure you've at least played somewhat of a stealth game, as there are many good ones out there. And many different kinds of stealth games. The cool thing about Theif, is that it is all in the First Person, and it really makes you feel like you are THERE. You are in the shadows lurking through the halls of a medieval-steampunk castle, avoiding grumpy, angry, and sometimes drunk crusty medieval-steampunk guards. Along the way, you find loot, but you also find lots of notes that not only give you hints about where to go, what to do, but also enchance and deepen the story of the game, which is so darkly un-sentimental, gritty, and at times, terrifying, that you will forget that you live in 2013 and there is no such think as a Gas Arrow. It's a great game. It has it flaws, but the development team had no idea how the zombies were going to be received so we can't fault them for that. They made the corrections, and put them in Theif II, which has you sneaking around humans mostly. Play this first though. Have a taffing good time, and don't quit playing at the haunted cathedral.

Mesmerizing

Thief: Deadly Shadows was my first experience with the Thief series, and only just recently did I play through Thief Gold. I installed an HD graphics mod which made the game look gorgeous and my playthrough of the massive amount of content even more enjoyable! I greatly appreciated the large maps, puzzles and strategy; I even played through on expert difficulty which wasn't just a 'make enemies hit harder' mode...it adds challenges and special mission objectives. Everything about this game shows that it was designed with a lot of thought and care; even the music itself is simple to retain immersion and allow you to hear everything around you while also being atmospheric and hypnotic. Highly recommend to stealth fans!

It has created a new genre

One of my all-time favorites. After so many "shoot everywhere and get the roasted chicken to heal" types of first-person games, Thief brought something new: it was a new experiment to play under the constraint of avoiding direct fight, furthermore thinking over each and every movement – and realizing every planned movement the right way. Thief offered us a fine graphic, great sounds, and a fantastic atmosphere. Though the almost empty rooms in the buildings are far from today's graphic demands, the whole game has a very persuasive atmosphere, which makes us feel that it has its own world. Pilfering food in Lord Bafford's kitchen, then making some mess, or hiding in a dark spot from the pursuing Hammerites, hoping for a chance to flee, or stealthing in abandoned places, trying to avoid the rattling undead are all fantastic experiences. I can only recommend this game.
