Every bit as definitive as Half Life.
Thief: The Dark Project stands beside Half Life as the most influential 'FPS' ('First Person Shooter') titles ever made. DOOM and Quake were the birth of the genre, but Thief and Half Life were where the fps genre grew wings. In a time when we are besieged by FPS titles focused heavily on merging ultra-violence with tomorrow's technology, Thief is the exact opposite. This is, like Half Life, a game all about it's story, it's protagonist, and it's utterly enthralling world. Looking Glass Studios didn't have 7.1 surround sound to work with. Nor did they have HDR lighting - or even Bloom! - but my gods they made atmosphere anyway. They turned the footsteps and mutter of an approaching guard into something that made your blood run cold for a moment. They turned the moaning shamble of a zombie into something that genuinely inspired fight or flight. This wasn't merely the 'Amnesia' of it's day: it's the game that inspired every pulse-pounding, nerve-racking, 'crouching in the shadows praying' moment in every title that followed it. Thief Gold isn't merely a Good Old Game: it's one of the landmarks in gaming history. Absolutely every gamer should own this game and it's equally brilliant sequels.
