Thief™ II: The Metal Age gives you a chance to revisit the dark streets of the City, now changed by the Order of Mechanists, a new cult which has embraced many of the followers of the fallen religion of the Hammerites. In a world of steam robots and cameras Garrett will have to face a new opponent - Sheriff Gorman Truart, a lawman determined to rid the City of all criminals, starting with master-thief Garrett. Equipped with a new set of tools, including flash mines and scouting orbs, Garrett has to keep himself alive and unveil the secret behind Truart's actions. Starts out looking as a simple case of corruption will eventually become much more, and Garrett again finds himself a reluctant savior--but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to rob the City blind while he saves it!
Are you the sneaky type? Do you have a problem with the concept of personal property (unless it's your's)? Do you feel that shadows are your best friends? Thief™ II: The Metal Age will provide you with hours of stealth and thievery, just the way you like it.

Of the original thief games, this one is the best in my opinion. The levels are huge and so well designed with more interesting enemies than the original. The AI is incredible and entertaining. The gadgets are fun to mess around with, and the world is incredibly immersive. The sound design is top notch. You can play this game with your eyes closed and know where every guard is just by the sound. No other game I know of has better sound propogation effects. Though the grapics are dated, I think they're stylistically charming and similar to what many developers are emulating nowadays (i.e. dusk, strafe).
In short, this is a must-play for anyone who enjoys stealth even casually or amazing world design.
Also, I originally played this from a cd.
Many other reviews of this game covered anything I'd want to say, but will simply add that this influential, consequential classic raised the bar and set the stage for Dishonored, Prey and so many others. Aside from the environments, there are parallels to System Shock 2 in design and this is one I've loved since its release day. In present day, The Dark Mod carries on this traditions.
If you like stealth games, try thief 1 and thief 2, they require some easy patching to work properly (see youtube), but they are the best on the marker imo
Thief 2 is one of those games that really makes you realize good games and believable worlds are not about technology and graphics, but about design, gameplay, and writing. For a game with mythical machines and crazy conspiracies, this is among the most believable worlds there is in video gaming. You can lose yourself for hours on a single mission, exploring all the details laid out and trying to be a completionist. It's a wonderful game!
