There's a lot to argue about "The Witcher", but the fact is that this game is astonishingly replayable even a decade later, and remains one of the most exciting classic role-playing games of our time.
I kmnow when I want to begin with the witcher, I had many problems with the swords because it took so long before I can attack the other one. This is my only critic on this game and i have to play the second, witcher 2.
Sorry Iam not the best gamer, maybe it was my fault that I couldnt play the first witcher I dont know .
But the others two episodes Ilove so much to play and Iam very proud that this is a polish production.
Its so beautiful and amazing to see the whole artwork , to hear the music.
Now I began to read the first book to the witcher.
Lovely greetz to all of you from Berlin
I got this game for free, and I know that this isn't a triple A title, so perhaps I should not be too harsh.
I got used to the game quick enough, I was worried I would stop because of the severely outdated gameplay mechanics, but don't get me wrong, the gameplay mechanics and especially combat is bad. There's really nothing skillful about combat and I felt playing through the game on easy was a good choice so as to avoid getting frustrated by wonky RNG mechanics and cheap deaths like getting stunned and blinded and just sitting there staring at the screen, not able to do anything while receiving damage from four sources.
I read all the books and played the younger games, so for sake of continuity I wanted to play this game as well. The game starts off quite strong in a Kaer Mohren and later a swamp, much like Witcher 3. The atmosphere is actually quite good and it's fun to know the background info that returns later in games 2 and 3.
The quests sometimes forces you to make tough decisions, which would increase replayability if I would have actually liked playing the game. There are some fun quests here and there, but DAMN there is just WAY too much running to A - B - A - B, and though that's bad enough, it's made even worse that you have to load every new cell, even things like going upstairs in a house!
I felt the plot wasn't too captivating, Salamandra felt out of place in the world of the witcher, and the closer you get to the end, the more ridiculous the enemies become. An entire army of otherworldy mutants just doesn't feel right, and the fact that Salamandra isn't really mentioned in the other games hints that the developers probably shifted their views quite dramatically in how the game games are to be presented.
Music is decent, voice acting goes from alright to downright awful. Character models almost look universally ugly and lifeless
Play this game if you're REALLY a witcher fan, but on its own I cannot recommend it, as hard as I tried to like it
My time with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition really isn't much in comparison to the time I spent with the other games in the series, but even in the short run, I find this game quite enjoyable. Combat is unique, somewhat like a rhythm game, and the writing is top notch.
As of writing this review it is 2019, and some mechanics feel somewhat dated (the sex cards feel kinda...weird?) but ultimately at $10 (with frequent deals) you absolutely cannot go wrong, and you'll likely be given a ton of context for the rest of the series.
I don't play too many games, so take this with a pinch of salt.
Battle system quirky and hard at first, but quite easy and enjoyable once you figure it out.
Leveling system interesting and not too specialising.
Weapon customisation a bit eccentric, but I likable enough, makes you appreciate each item you choose to use.
Items: there is a large variety of these, each with many sub groups.
Story: Still in act 5 (farming a bit more gold), anyway the story is prety good if not excellent.
World: this is much larger than I expected it.
Graphics: obviously quite dated by modern game standard, but I was actually quite impressed with these having not played many RPGs recently and not at all with this view point.
Inventory and Stash: Inventory big enough for small items, so great, but you can't ever carry too many weapons you might want to sell for money. The Stash inventory at the Inns is great in that it doesn't run out of room. The biggest problem is that you're unable to sort and filter the items in the stash inventory once you clog it up with lots of items. This is quite irritating at the end of the game when you're trying to prep for the last segment of the game. (SPOILER: Consolidate it ahead of time in mid act 4, you can only access items during the first scene of act 5 and there are no shops.)
Reason why I'm writing the review:
The game crashed again after farming for a while without saves.
It does this at least once a day, usually after an hour or two.
This is a bit frustrating.
Please do something about this GOG.
