An enjoyable adventure game with flaws

I suspect that any judgement of The Whispered World will depend a lot on whether you enjoy the art, music, voices and story. Therefore, any rating is probably highly personal. For my part, I enjoyed the game a lot. Some voices are.. shaky, but that was not sufficient to turn me off. Aside from that, there are definite technical flaws in the game. For me, the game crashed a lot (using Windows XP) although thankfully it starts up rather quickly. It also had a tendency to start up with grainy graphics when playing the game in full-screen mode. That has a workaround, though: if you start the game with the 'options' launcher it will work just fine. Another annoyance was the fact that sound options sometimes reset. On the gameplay level: expect to use a walkthrough. Puzzles range from easily doable all the way to 'how on earth did they expect me to come up with this solution?' Those are some serious flaws, but I still enjoyed the Whispered World quite a lot. I didn't mind that the main character is depressed, for me it added flavour to the game. Just as I enjoyed a lot of the voice acting as appropriate for the characters. And the story is rather nice, too. But, as I said, that's probably highly subjective, so do try the demo before deciding on a purchase unless you're really into adventure games.

Audibly and Visually Beautiful

The artwork is amazing and so beautiful in Whispered World. The atmosphere of each scene is amplified by the high caliber soundtrack. I would give this game five stars based on creativity. I thought it was going to be the usual save the world story, but after completing the game, the story has a deeper layer to it which makes finishing the game very satisfying. I only have on major complaint and that is Sadwick's voice. The voice over sounds like and old guy trying to sound like a child; it's creepy! They should have hired a real child to do the voice, it would have been more believable. I had to take a star off for that. I'm a person that tries not to look at a walkthrough, but the puzzles can be quite difficult and sometimes not very forgiving. For example, if you try to combine items or do something in the wrong order, it will not work. Don't feel bad if you have to look up a solution because sometimes the solution to a puzzle doesn't even make sense! I had a bug in my game where I had to do the dialogue puzzles twice for it to take and continue; took me forever to figure that one out. I usually try something once and move on if it doesn't work. I recommend checking it out if you're into adventure (point and click) games, but beware the awful voice over.

A curios-annoying exp that made me cry

What a weird game… the premise goes by the usual protagonist-saves-world, but that is just the surface of the story. You quickly finds out that he constantly acts against all warnings, but this reoccurring theme and the way it is delivered to the player annoyed me after a while and really made me wondered why it's done so. Throughout the journey, you will meet characters that will either try to demotivate the protagonist or try to help him. Everybody have a main personality trait that defines them, yet the most of them are witty, funny andor charming. The scenery is beautiful, the voice-acting is well done, the puzzles are ok-ish with little need for external help, the story is flat up until the very end of the game and the meta-ideas for life placed by the dev are humorous. like the two stones, for example. Where the game fails is with the protagonist's attitude himself to world, which is far from positive: his attitude is always look on the bitter side, always complain and moan. The constant elongated whining was way, way too much. It made me hold on to all the good stuff and harshly repress the never-ending negativity, and after push to the end – the ending stroke such a cord within me, moved me and made me cry. Good cry of sympathy and care. My heart goes out to the family this game is its inspiration. I read the reviewers who stopped playing because of the whining issue and I understand completely. I do believe, however, that this game has a lot to offer if you successfully ignore that issue. For me, even though I finished it months ago, this game's ending is not forgotten.

About the voice acting

I agree with most reviewers, the puzzles become very hard and not always logical. But then again - the whole TWW-universe is not built on "normal" logic, so I personally didn't care. I loved the story. And I also loved the voice acting, BUT I played it first in German and I don't know about EN or other languages. Just saying. That little depressed clown made me laugh more than once. :-D

annoying and adorable

Lovely graphics! adorable character! one can get tired of his repetitive saying when you are clicking around to figure out what to do but easy to skip through the dialog. Good Storyline! The downside... OMG you NEED a walkthrough for the entire game!! Even hardcore search & find people will find this a pain in the ... What this game needs is difficulty settings, better hints or include a walkthrough with it!
