For thousands of years the Dark One has been trapped, but now the four seals keeping him imprisoned have been lost. Based on just the game alone, this would be an easy 4 out of 5. Unfortunately on newer PCs, the cutscenes will not play at all and I experienced a lot of crashes and technical bugs. Definitely worth struggling through if, like me, you are a fan of old school shooters and the Wheel Of Time series, but probably not worth the effort of troubleshooting these issues for anyone who doesn't fit those qualifications.
I bought this game back when it first came out and I still have the box around. I did not finish this game then, since one of the missions bugged and I lost interest. I did have a fondness for it though. Does it hold up?
Not really. The Wheel of Time is a fairly generic 90's FPS, in all the good and bad that entails, with magical spells for weapons. There's a bit Wheel of Time peppered in to give it character, but the end result falls somewhat flat. It is obvious they had great ambitions for the game and some of the levels look nice, but there's not a lot of enemy variety and the vast array of different spells is rarely utilized properly. Indeed, there are a lot different spells with interesting functions, that in practice prove almost useless. Some feel aimed at multiplayer and PVP and have no real function in single player. This is also apparent with the citadel mode, that never makes an appearance in the single player campaign, but could make for a fun time with friends.
The story doesn't stack up to Robert Jordan, to say the least, and the game ends with a whimper. There's so much more that should have been done, that the devs seem to have planned, but didn't get around to implementing. It's disappointing.
The game is not bad. I enjoyed bits of it, especially early on, but it's hard to recommend it to most people.
Played on Linux using Bottles. Unfortunately, performance wasn't great even back in the day, let alone using Wine. I had a lot of graphical issues that, while playable, were distracting. The game also crashed a few times and at one point trying to quick save crashed the game. I got past that, but it was weird. I did play it from start to finish, but buyer beware.
A first person shooter in the world of The Wheel of Time. It is a beautiful looking game and takes you right into the world which Robert Jordan created with his books. Your mission is to retrieve a very important artifact and so your mission is to travel through this world to find it.
The gameplay is mainly first person shooter, with some tactical elements, minor exploration and puzzles. The graphics are beautiful and is probably the strongest feature of the game. The controls are similar to other FPS games of the time, but maybe not as refined as the bigger titles.
Since this game evolves around the lore from The Wheel of Time, I think players with some knowledge from the books will have a better experience than without. A lot of concepts, locations and story elements are not explained but will surely bring excitement to people that knows about these things from the books.
MUCH kudos and respect to the creators/developers of "Wheel of Time."... not just for the quality of game experience, but for the theme of fighting the Good Fight, or following the Dharma [however you choose to prhrase it]. I have only just begun to explore this metarealm, but so far it appears to be a shockingly refreshing gem based on wisdom, not violence or any other of the typical, shallow, boring themes of the mainstream bourgeoisia, and just what I was hoping for but dared think existed. _/*\_
The game throws a lot of annoying enemies and traps at you. One particular map is full of traps and the only function it has is to annoy you (people quit the game when playing this map and for good reasons). Later on it combines traps with very strong enemies. At the end of the day I'm playing a game for fun and not to save scum at every step. It seems they haven't tested this game for fun. There is a potential for 5 stars but I will give it 2 due to improper game design. You have been warned.
