The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
KEY FEATURES
The player-driven story RPG
In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way
New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions
During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony
Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.
The Outer Worlds has sharp writing, fun combat, and great companions, but it's too short and too easy. Excellent if you like Fallout but wish it took itself even less seriously. Just don’t expect depth past the witty dialogue.
I like this game so far, it has a nice feel and runs well BUT the menu for flying with your spaceship is awfull, and when I mean awfull it looks like it was generated with early LLM because it just makes my eyes hurt, apart from that voice acting is good shooting is good, nothing revoliutionary in this genre
Of unimaginative mediocrity.
Here is a simple synopsis of this game's plot:
Halcyon - a colony of mankind - is gradually diminishing due to malnourishment caused by the ecosystem's averse nature to accept the flora and fauna of earth.
The only people meant to solve this problem are asleep on the colony ship Hope but waking them up could either cause severe side-effects on the subjects or further strain the meagre supplies the colony has to offer to its denizens.
Furthermore there is no contact to earth and the last earth-bound ship disappeared without a sign.
Your character is meant to decide the fate of the colony. There is no right or wrong.
Sadly I don't know what's currently going on with obsidian and why their recent games have been such irredeemable snooze fests because it makes no sense to me. People claim it's due to former talent leaving in droves which isn't true. The same people that helped create new Vegas worked on this awful game too. So I'm left dumbfounded as to why the outer worlds even exists. The synopsis paints the picture of a gritty mature themed RPG. One in which you have to constantly make grey choices.
But instead it's this odd mix of steampunk, forced humour and bad writing which makes me wonder what the people working on this game did. Did they twiddle their thumps after the brainstorming session? Got bored after building the foundation and let clowns finish the rest for them? Because the result is one of the most tedious games I have played in my life. At least avowed offered somewhat decent gameplay but this game is actually just terrible. The music, the atmosphere, the writing and the gameplay encouraged me to play F:NV again instead of forcing myself through this agonising experience.
In the end a sequel - or a spiritual successor - is meant to turn the process of replaying the predecessor into a gruelling experience but playing outer worlds - and failing to finish it once - is akin to rubbing your hands on a cheese grater.
