More of the main game

If you did like the main game I can also recomend this DLC. They improofed the intersections between the gameplay parts. You now don't have to take care of your passengers and don't have to play the minigames. You can fully concentrate on the dialog and crafting midicine and bullets for your pistol (wich is now your only weapon, no shotgun, also no weapon upgrades) or get some healing from your passenger. On the other side you only can take one passenger with you so you have to decide wisely (the caracters have thre stats: crafting, healing and social). The story gives you more puzzle pieces to fit together with the main game e.g. you can find out why the giant guardian robot in the main game crashed or we get to know the "council" that was talked of a lot in the main game and find out what some of their decisions were about. We also meet some of the characters of the main game again and revisit some places of the main game. Still the story doesn't give us the huge picture and I hope future DLCs will finaly explain all of the missing parts about whats happening in this world. Why only 4 stars then? I had a bug that my character sometimes sunk into the ground or hooverd above it after using a stair. This was not only a visual bug but also made my character being stuck there, unable to get to different parts of the level and I had to restart the level (or at least load the last checkpoint) to get my character moving again. It didn't happen too often and also isn't that huge of a deal because loading/restarting fixes it but still is annoyig if you have to redo half a level even though you had a perfect run because of such bug. (Happening at Version 1.4.3) This DLC fits the main game well and expands it in a good way (you also dont have to play the main game again, you can start the DLC seperatly from the main menu). It has some minor gameplay improfements to the main game and I#m looking forward for more DLCs like this so one day we get to see the whole storyline.

A Step Up

The DLC is a whole new campaign through the eyes of a regular survivor who progressively gets more mixed up in the intrigues of the world that surrounds him. Personally I like the gameplay in this one more than the base game. Melee is stronger, ammo is less of an issue and overall the combat feels more fun with the only major drawback being the fact that you only get to use the handgun; no shotgun/rifle. The maps are also a lot larger, even though they are fewer than in vanilla. A great step up is getting rid of the hassle of keeping survivors alive with food/medkits, although the fact that that you can only have one other person with you at a time means the conversations in transit are less interesting (even though in this one your character speaks). The story is good, however it raises more minor questions and ends up answering the major plot poins, to the point where playing the base game plus this will give you a pretty good understanding of what's going on. Overall I liked this campaign.

Harder but shorter than the main game

Think of it as compressed and harder version of the main game. It's much shorter (~2h), there are no additional weapons (just gun and baseball bat). The minigame resource management in the train is replaced by a screen showing you in the car where you can craft, heal or continue using button clicks. The higher difficulty comes mainly from more aggressive enemies that tend to injure you in melee, less ammunition/med packs and badly implemented savepoints. Like dying in the main game costs you a few seconds to replay, while in the DLC it happens that you have to repeat half of the level. Partly this seems to be caused by the game expecting you to travel through the level in a certain order and if you don't there's no savepoint at all for the parts you did in "wrong" order. All of this would be OK if at least the chance had been used to reveal more of the story. Instead, there are new mystery elements introduced and the whole side story is wasted for some cheesy "surprise" ending.

Not fun

Levels are too big, save points are too infrequent. Clear out 75% of a level, die, and have to do it over again. "Strong Melee" still rarely works, have to right click 10 times before it activates. the new monsters are just added annoyance, and engagements are reduced to being a puzzle. The original wasn't exactly great, but it's just more obnoxious and less enjoyable this time around, doubt I'll bother finishing it.

Even more heart, more polish, new issues

The Only Traitor is a side story that in the end becomes one of the story inputs in the main game. The DLC's main character travels with his car, looking for a shelter from the Second Visitation. First of all: gameplay-wise, it is better than the main game. You can see that the devs carefully listened to player feedback and removed or heavily changed the most problematic parts... while introducing new issues. The management bit while travelling is now gone. You can just learn the story of your current companion and craft ammo and medkits and then decide it's time to arrive to the next destination. The enemies are more varied than in the base game. Fighting now requires more precision than patience, and you learn more of the backstory, and in more sizeable chunks (which helps). And finally, the DLC's soundtrack is, like, totally awesome. However, there are issues, too. Even though the protagonist's baseball bat is a stronger weapon than Edward's fists in the main game, I was happier with fighting for Edward. I knew exactly how to use the fists, while with the bat, I never learned for sure how the swinging worked. Often it happened that an enemy that I'd normally one-shoot would surprise me with surviving the attack. Also, charging the strong melee attack failed even more frequently than in the base game (originally, I blamed my old mouse, until I found out that other players had the same problem). Also, even though we learn more about the First Visitation and the Council, especially the role of Arthur Vane now makes even less sense than in the base game. Unless you simply accept that there's no point trying to understand alien logic. But then again, why bother learning a story that doesn't make human sense? Technically, The Only Traitor improves on the main game in most areas, has a great soundtrack and explains more of the story. If you liked the base game, you should definitely get it. If not, it wouldn't change your mind.
