The first game, Final Station, was pretty good. Not great, but had its moments.
This one is cleaner and easier, but not more engaging, though the train maintenance got canned.
However, it throws out environmental storytelling, since you're seeing things you already saw, and the payoff at the end is oblique and stupid and doesn't even match the narrative of the first game. So the main thing going for the first chapter is gone, so now you have a mildly entertaining platformer with survival elements and simple combat and irritating context.
2.5/5 6/10 . Very small 3✩. Main game 3✩ (4 if not for analytics).
(unity analytics in the main game, my rating on the DLC alone isnt affected by that in this case)
The main game was really great, a hidden gem imo despite a few issues such as analytics (and quiete heavily generated logs at that) and no working Linux version which was promised but still hasnt been fixed.
Despite having so many questions by the end of finishing main game, the story was great and I was left wanting to know and play more of it.
The DLC is shorter and less polished, such as being able to click the music instruments in the main game but in the DLC we cant.
Its made mainly to address some of the many questions most players had and expand a bit more on that story and what led up to it some ~100 years previously.
The combat is easier, you have a bat which is sastifying to use and you have more ammo too.
As in the main game, looting is mostly pointless after a while (but we still do it b/c we cant help it) and there is not much need of crafting in this DLC.
There is only room for one passenger this time, which is fine, I stuck it out with my old boss, so that end to the roadtrip was pretty hilarious tbh xD
While I do think this DLC answers more questions that I was after, I am however again left after that ending with just as many questions and a big 'huh what' to what happened in this one xD
I need a second DLC to explain the first DLC even further lol.
A second game would also be great in general tbh.
I ended up watching a video explaining the DLC, The ending was pretty neat in tying into the main story where you play as the train driver! But I was a bit confused who I was playing as in this DLC and who he was in comparison to the main game.
So I still sat with a big questionmark at the end, just like I did in the main game.
The story in general is intriguing tho and I would like to see more of this world and the game style.
As others mention, some of the save checkpoints is a bit far apart, but it still only takes a min or so, and its only in some locations.
I died a handful times in different locations and 2 of them had a bit of legwork to get back to, but the others were fine like in the main game and it doesnt take long to kill those few mobs again.
The music I think was aimed for a roadtrip kind of style. I loved most of it, but a few of the tunes kinda felt a bit off for the rest of the game in general.
My main complaint and only real negative thing to mention, and its a serious one, is that the text scrolls on way too fast.!
I actually missed probably half of it all, both in the car because I was also looking at crafting, and outside. Once you get close to ppl talking it also overlaps the boxes and it seems based on proximity and trigger spots to pop up the next text. and that was very often when you're automatically running around and then poof its gone. Most of the long lines I only got half of b/c it was cut short too fast ;(
I do liked it and Im glad I played it, it answers a lot, but again also leaves questions behind. I think most wont get what the ending was exactly since he clearly fails at his mission based on what happens in the main game.
I guess I was really hoping for some answers as to who exactly I was in the main game and why I, the train driver, was so special and how I got to be where I was.
I dont at all agree with ppl saying the DLC is better than the main game, but I also dont think it was at all bad, its definitly worth playing if you liked the story.
The price is fair and I hope to see more from this dev.
