I remember playing this game when it first came out, and when it was over, I cried a little for what a wonderful journey I had, because it really was, the longest journey. If I remember correctly, it did have an open ending, allowing for the sequal? "Dreamfall, the longest journey" was not as memorable as the first.
This is the first point & click game I ever played, and it's still my favorite. I still remember how pissed off I got not being able to figure out how to get the stupid egg off the branches right at the very beginning. But I refused to cheat and look online for how to solve it. It was so much more rewarding when I finally figured it out.
In case anyone is wondering, there is a fix for this game online with higher res textures if you can't get it to work. I wish I could remember where I found it. I know it's not hard to find. I think I just did a Google search for "The Longest Journey won't start".
Playing the game for the first time recently with higher res textures made me think how cool it could be to play a remake of this game. Even a fan made one could be pretty good. Just some wishful thinking. :-)
This is a classic point and click adventure game with great writing and characters. If you've played the more recent Dreamfall games and want to discover April Ryan's backstory, you should start here. Some of the puzzles are particularly obtuse, so don't feel bad consulting a walkthough, otherwise you will get very frustrated!
The Longest Journey is the start into a game series that stretches over decades and yet just produced three games.
But I love every of the three games for its own.
The Longest Journey is full of fantasy, beauty and also darkness. A very interesting story hooked me to the game and its supported by the great characters in game.
I finished TLJ today after several days of playing, and although it was indeed a long journey, I wanted it to last longer. The whole environment of the game is beautiful, from the music to the lovingly drawn 2D backgrounds, and the voice acting is quite phenomenal. The game also features so many unique and remarkable characters that stick in your head, as well as really funny dialogues. And there are some puzzles that are quite hard, but nevertheless beatable after some trying and thinking. However, some puzzles felt quite unlogical (one is apparently even listed among the 10 most difficult puzzles in adventure games of all times), so when you are stuck, do not feel ashamed to consider a walk-through instead of giving up on the game altogether. I consulted the "Spoiler-Free Walkthrough" by Gossip91, which helped me through a few rough passages.
It's also advisable to play the game with ScummVM, which allowed me to play through the game without any flaw.
This is the first point-and-click adventure game that I was able to finish. And I'm happy I did.
