Bright lights flare across the night sky. The wind rages outside the thin walls of your wooden cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You look at the meager supplies in your pack, and wish for the days before the power mysteriously went out. How much longer will you survive?

Welcome to THE LONG DARK, the innovative exploration-survival experience Wired magazine calls "the pinnacle of an entire genre".  THE LONG DARK  challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster.

In THE LONG DARK, you are getting both the genre-defining Survival Mode, honed after years of open development and frequent updates, and the award-winning episodic narrative mode, WINTERMUTE.

THE LONG DARK is the free-form, non-narrative Survival Sandbox that has defined the genre since launching in 2014. After years of open development and dozens of major updates, THE LONG DARK now stands at the pinnacle of the entire genre. Survival is your only goal, and death your only end. Make your own survival story with every game.

The game that defined death for the survival genre. When you die in Survival, your save is deleted. Every decision matters.

The game challenges players to think for themselves by providing the information but never the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.

Monitor your Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue, and Cold as you struggle to balance resources with the energy needed to obtain them. Every action costs Calories, and time is your most precious resource. Choose your path carefully.

Over 100 gear items including Tools, Light Sources, Weapons, First Aid supplies, Clothing, and more.

Explore a 50 square kilometer Northern Canadian wilderness spanning 12 major regions and all the zones that connect them in search of life-saving supplies. Distant mountains, coastal towns, mines, farmlands, and a huge expanse of brutal winter wilderness to test your survival mettle.

Hunt, fish, trap, climb, map, search for life-saving food and gear items, and try to avoid dying from the hostile wildlife, succumbing to hypothermia, frostbite, or dysentery (amongst other uncomfortable afflictions), find and maintain your life-saving gear. Hunt and be hunted by: Wolves, Bears, Moose, Rabbits, Deer, Crows, and more to come in future updates.

Four distinct Experience Modes let you find a challenge level you are comfortable with, such as Pilgrim Mode, which is meant to be quiet and pensive, all the way to Interloper Mode, where only the most experienced survivors have a chance to last a week. If none of the four Experiences suits you, use Custom Mode settings to tailor your Survival Mode game to your specific tastes.

Features the music of Sascha Dikiciyan.

Several standalone Challenge Modes offer objective-based experiences designed to last 1-3 hours each, such as Whiteout -- the race to gather enough supplies to prepare for a monster blizzard. Or Hunted, where you need to escape a murderous Bear. Complete them to unlock Feats that provide long-term gameplay benefits in Survival Mode. Additional Challenges include: Hopeless Rescue, Nomad, Archivist, As the Dead Sleep, and Escape the Darkwalker.

Included in THE LONG DARK is the episodic story-mode  WINTERMUTE.  Four of the five episodes that form WINTERMUTE are included, and Episode Five is in development, slated for release soon. This will bring the WINTERMUTE storyline to its conclusion.

The first four episodes of WINTERMUTE represent approximately 30 hours of gameplay. Episode Five is included in the price of the game, and will be unlocked for free when it is released.

Bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive as he desperately searches for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the small town of Milton, where he begins to understand the scope of this quiet apocalypse.

Mackenzie’s search for Astrid takes him deeper into the savage Winter wilderness. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid, but can he be trusted?

In the aftermath of events in Milton, an enigmatic stranger rescues Dr. Astrid Greenwood (player character) from near death. Facing the blizzards of Pleasant Valley, Astrid must bring all her skills as a doctor to bear on the survivors she encounters. But will she find Mackenzie, and get closer to the mystery that's taking them to Perseverance Mills?

A murderous gang of convicts has captured Mackenzie. Desperate to escape one of the darkest corners of Great Bear Island, he must somehow survive his fiercest enemy yet. Can Mackenzie recover the Hardcase, continue his search for Astrid, and also save the innocents caught up in this deadly confrontation?

NOTE: Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath. You can save your progress as you play.

In addition to releasing the remaining episode of WINTERMUTE, we intend to continue updating Survival Mode with limited free updates alongside our paid DLC Expansion Pass, TALES FROM THE FAR TERRITORY. This is on top of the over 100 updates we have made to the game over the past 8 years of open development. Keep in mind that your purchase of THE LONG DARK entitles you to all five episodes of WINTERMUTE without extra charge.

Survival done right.

This is one of the only survival games on the market that I would recommend. Although it isn't finished yet (like most survival games right now), it's in an incredibly playable state. It's unique and not only because it's single player with no zombies and ISN'T a buggy mess. It's a real survival experience with a huge focus on immersion, exploration and the constant struggle between life and death in the Canadian wilderness. The art style is gorgeous, the sound design is phenomenal and it's given me some of the most intense, compelling experiences I've ever had playing a video game. Freezing to death in a snowstorm, desperately trying to find your way back to shelter while wolves howl all around you is not something you soon forget. The developers have done early access (or games in development) right with frequent updates, significant improvements and good community interaction. I really can't recommend the game enough, I've played it for 33 hours and the game isn't even finished yet. That's in sandbox mode which is in a super polished state with multiple large maps, tons of places to explore and many, many, many ways to die. Story mode is coming later which will actually explain why you're the only walking human left in this "small" part of Canada. I can't speak for its quality yet but I can say the player characters will be played by Mark Meer & Jennifer Hale. AKA both the male and female Commander Shepards of Mass Effect fame. You can hear their comments, cries and pained groans in sandbox mode already. As you can probably tell, I kinda like this game. In my opinion it's easily the best survival game around (no matter what platform you're buying on), alongside Don't Starve. I don't think you'll regret your purchase unless you're a much bigger fan of multiplayer zombies than I am.

A survival experience without zombies!

A fantastic game! The GOG summary doesn't specify that now you can play on SANDBOX mode, so you don't have to wait for the story. The sandbox mode is fully enjoyable ... it is hard to survive, and there are many dangers that wait for you ... wolves, bears, etc ...; not only wild animals but also the frozen temperatures, the need to eat and drink, the need to explore every possible location in order to survive ,,, this is the only goal. There are different level of difficulty ... for example in the simple of them the wild animals won't attack you but you have still to survive by yourself. Beautiful graphics, good sounds and simple commands; when you are dead you loose your saves, so it is permadeath game.

Solo Survival Sandbox w/ Story Mode Soon

Edit 2026: I see this game came back to GOG and noticed my review. This is a VERY, VERY dated review and the story mode still isn't complete a decade later. I soured on the game and vision/visionary behind it, heavily, in that decade. Seek other reviews for more accurate or up to date information. Initial review 2016; I was actually surprised this wasn't an initial "in development" title when GOG started the program. The way they described their process of meticulously picking titles they felt fit their mold made me immediately think of The Long Dark. I've had this title on Steam for some time and its the only "in development" (cough paid beta cough) purchase I don't regret. The devs made a SINGLEPLAYER survival sandbox to test gameplay for a narrative story they wanted tell. But then the sandbox took on a life of its own as the users loved it. It has been completely expanded and updated multiple times at a very consistent rate. The sandbox stands on its own atop the mountain of singleplayer survival. And the story and full release looms very closely. Regret free purchase in that respect, or indeed just wait a little if you need it to be full release. Right now you'll get a very complete and immersive singleplayer, lonely, survival experience. Which is something I've searched for for some time. No connecting to servers, no worrying about "griefers" every time you log out, etc etc. Just you and the elements (and an angry wolf or two depending on your difficulty setting). It's got everything you'd expect from the genre; You'll have to wander, you'll have to scavenge, and you'll get hungry and thirsty. And while this is the most "realistic" survival experience in my opinion it also was never meant to be set 100% in reality at all. This is still a world created by the devs. The crafting for long term survival is a bit shallow and the wolves are not "true to life" and are there to pose a threat to your character beyond status bars. And speaking of status bars I leave you with one "pro tip" to avoid the titular Long Dark (death); Your thirst and hunger are not tedious chores to keep capped/maxed. Pay attention to them emptying and bottoming out, not filling to the tip top. I'd say see you out there, but you're on your own! Highly recommended.

Hinterland Studios is magnificent

Early-access / alpha games have a bad reputation right now, and for good reason. This game does not have that problem. The Long Dark is a stellar example of how the Alpha process can function incredibly well. The Hinterland team releases substantive monthly content patches as well as hotfix updates when the community identifies bugs. Devs follow the community closely on Reddit and Twitch. The team has a jaw-dropping amount of AAA experience. If you're even interested in the concept of survival games, you owe it to yourself to check this game out. The game is polished, immersive, nerve-wracking, and full of the feels. Give it a try.

"die-a-lot" should be a genre

Other than wolves and bears you poke or get poked by you won't be dealing with any otherworldly beings or such. You still have to paranoidly look around in the large and lonely maps (which connect to eachother) and listen to your surroundings because you never know when a forest animal will jump you (animals just bail on easy mode). Hey maybe some day there'll be a mod to add zambies or something. It has a very very simple UI, yet pretty functional. Even in the easiest setting it's not an easy game. You can't build a stable base and expect to survive off of your little farm, you have to constantly move, scavenge, and Gog willing, craft a bow and a couple of arrows (don't get your hopes up). I've been playing it for a while now, I own it on a different platform, and even a few months back it was worth your money. So much was added to it and more is on the way. So far game runs very smooth, I experienced no problems save two crashes in many months of play time. Oh and you are a "white man" in this game, meaning: you can't jump. Not that you can't jump high, you just can't jump at all, there's no jumping in this game. So you have to walk around obstacles and you can't jump over small gaps. There's crouching for stealth purposes but no jumping. I'm not sure if that's good or bad but the overall experience is pretty awesome. Sometimes I get the feeling that something is missing but can't put my finger on it. All in all it's a full game and I have no idea what can be added to it.
