Back to the Mansion!!!
I stayed up late to give it a try before bed. I couldn't be more excited to have this game again, legal, DRM free, and easy to play in windows. I'd have paid the asking price for just the original. Just a couple thoughts from my first 15 minutes... The new interface is handy, easy to use, but there is a small issue that might bother the purist making their kids take their first trip through time. The sentence wheel is context sensitive, meaning it will only show options that are valid for the object clicked on. This had the potential to give away clues. Right click a door, and the only options are "look", "open", and "close". Click on a clock, and, well, you know. The music is neat, fuller, and higher fidelity. It's not the original music, so the familiar hooks and stings aren't exactly where you remember them. I prefer the original. I really hoped to see some orchestral recordings. The visuals are top notch. I really like the classic art style. It really looks like they just tried to visualize what the original pixels were trying to show. The art feels exactly the same as the original, except maybe Bernard's nose is a little too big. Another nice feature is the widescreen. Again, for the purist, this can take something away from some of the jokes. Early in the game Fred walks off screen and then returns to view abruptly as part of a joke. In the widescreen format, he stayed in view, which kinda ruined the joke. But, thus is the cost of telling in old story in a new language. The greatest thing is that now my wife, kids, nephews, dog, and anyone who ends up in my tentacle proof underground bunker will have a chance to visit the mansion...with pixels you won't cut your hands on, and post wax cylinder audio.
