Good concept of a game based on African masks and looks. Looks stylish, accompanied with some nice jazz music in the background, very well made although a bit short.
The Journey Down is a very good game. The first chapter serves more or less as a demo while chapters 2 and 3 are the "real deal". None of the chapters is strong enough to stand alone on its own, the three chapters together should be considered as one entity.
As a whole, it gets four stars because of its great atmosphere, because of captivating story, and background music. The package holds well together, the game is quite easy and thus remains interesting throughout it course, also at the same time it doesn't contain too much pixel hunting and isn't too much focused on inventory and the protagonists carrying every possible object with them.
It does not get the fifth star because a great deal of the style is indirectly stolen from Grim Fandango (which does not bother too much, but demonstrates lack of originality to certain extent that makes the outcome non-5-star material). Also some puzzles are too straight-forward, here and there I get the feeling that the solution is overly simple given the complexity of the problem. This applies also to dialogue puzzles, to my taste even more could have been achieved in that area.
However, four stars is already a good grade and this is where the game stands. For those looking for good, not best point and click adventure (perhaps you are already familiar with the creme de la creme), The Journey Down, in all 3 chapters, is recommended.
Fours stars , only real bad thing is the voice acting ,that aint a Jamacian Rasta man its the geek next door that got hired of some one in the dev team.
Just a warning: do not buy this game for MacOS in its current state (March '21).
1) You will not be able to install it automatically without resorting to hacks: https://www.gog.com/forum/shadow_tactics_blades_of_the_shogun/mac_game_doesnt_show_in_applications_folder_after_being_successfully_installed
2) After the hacky installation, you should be able to run the game, but it will start full-screen, with 70 percent of the screen (on a high res Retina screen) being black, while the game itself will be a tiny window in a low resolution in the corner. You can change to non-full-screen-mode and adjust the size of the window, but that will replace the problem with another one: the mouse will not be captured inside the window and you will be unable to click on anything outside the middle of the screen, because the mouse will then click on stuff on your desktop and the game window will lose focus.
I am sure the game is amazing and I will give it a try on a windows machine, but I hope GOG stops advertising it as working on MacOS, because it isn't.
