Near perfect
I absolutely loved this. If you enjoyed Firewatch, Soma, and slow-burning sci-fi like Asimov or even Star Trek TMP you should definitely pick this up. - The Invincible is a gorgeous game, but the highlight is probably the narrative. The writing, acting and direction is all superb and never gets schmultzy or cheap, instead it's a sober take on 1960's space exploration, with a nuanced cast of characters that still feel like they belong on a space mission (looking at you, Rama II). Much like Firewatch or even TT's The Walking Dead, you play as a pre-defined character, but you get to steer their dialogue and mold their character development as you go along. This even leads up to you getting to make key choices in how the story goes (often to the chagrin of the voice in your radio). The art direction is stellar and bold, mixing european retro sci-fi comics with classic Soviet-style engineering. The rover you get looks like a space Lada. You meet flying drones that look like Sputnik's great grandson. And it never feels cheap or is played for laughs, as in Fallout, rather it all feels authentic. The environmental design is however more important as exploration is a primary driver of the game. Regis III is absolutely gorgeous and every environment could be a painting that I'd love on my wall. As much as I like to sh*t on UE, the technical graphics allows these environments to shine with fidelity I've never seen in a game like this. Just an absolute feast for the eyes. You can tell that it's a budget title of course. The climbing mechanic can be finnicky as you struggle finding the right piece of rock that is climbable. The rover feels like a plastic toy. The dialogue sometimes cuts in to itself and, audibly different takes pop in when you make certain choices... The eurojank however, is subdued. I never got stuck and had to reload. I never got lost; It's all fine - but it's clearly a blemish. - 9/10 from me, one of the best narrative games I've played in some time.
