Solid remake, very much enjoyed it

Yeah, its short, but it's an arcade game, that's just how they were. (Back in MY day... yada yada) If you know what you are getting into, this is a great game. Looks good, controls fine with a little bit of tweaking the options, didn't run into any major issues in my couple of playthroughs as of writing this (just a couple tiny visual glitches, like really 2-frames or so tiny). I don't know what all the naysayers were expecting from a 90s lightgun game, but that is exactly what you get here. Fun times.

A Warranted Remake

In a world dominated by completely unnecessary and blatantly cash-grabby remasters and re-releases of all shapes and sizes it’s super-refreshing to see a remake whose existence is justified. I tried playing the original version back in the Windows XP days, and even then I had to jump through hoops to get it to run without the music. This is an original rail shooter, where you control your crosshair and are not in charge of your movement. Shoot enemies, save the occasional victim, don’t get hit. The story is left completely unchanged from the original and it’s pretty basic: you’re a government agent who's trying to stop Curien, an evil scientist, who’s seemingly been messing around with the human genome and created an army of undead in the process. The difficulty system is claimed to only affect your health and how many points you earn, but it feels like the health of regular enemies is also slightly affected. This remake introduces a couple of new gameplay elements (including, by the way, realistically attainable achievements). New weapons make the game stupidly easy, once unlocked, but you can counterbalance them by switching to the horde mode where the number of zombies is significantly increased. There are other ways to make the game easier or harder – you can toggle the automatic reload in the settings, use the help of a friend via local multiplayer, or type in cheat codes in the main menu. The House of the Dead is a beautifully recreated game, and honestly is an example of what a remake should be. I mean, Bethesda, if you’re so itching to sell an existing IP, stop rereleasing Skyrim, when you have Arena and Daggerfall that require DOSBox to run.

Unbearably bad.

I own this game on Steam. I detest it. The feel of the original is completely gone, destroyed. This is like asking an AI to make a remake. They just fundamentally get every single thing wrong. The new music is horrid. The performance is awful, the animations aren't better than that of the 1996 game. The pacing doesn't match nor surpass the original. It's slow. It's janky. The voice acting was redone but it's much worse than the original, not in a good way -it not only fails catasthrofically in capturing the original's charm, it's like a mockery of it. The original VAs tried. These didn't. I simply can't help but feel that the developers didn't want to work on this game, or that they outright hate the original for some reason. They don't get it. They don't understand why the original ate so many quarters, why people wanted to dual wield at the arcade.

BUGGY AND LAZY!

I just bought the game on 90% discount. I played the arcade but this is a lazy conversion. It is made in Unity which is not usually a warning but here all weak points are coming to live: endless loading times, desynchronized events, crashes back to desktop and inconsistent application states. On first start the introduction was not shown, only a black screen. Starting the game it crashed, starting it again I was able to complete the first level but then it crashed again. In the game when the enemies are jumping into the screen, they are invulnerable, so you may waste already bullets they got only vulnerable when they move to attack you. I will try again, otherwise this is my first refund ..
