I'm so glad I played this game, it's an epic puzzle-adventure game with beautiful visuals and I mean it- beautiful. The music is so good, the game itself is theraputic, well- until gunk gets annoying XD. The animations and everything is so well put together, a really good and light hearted story, and the puzzles are good too, killing those little creatures is so satisfying as you get to bash them into nothingness lol! if not for anything, I'd play this game solely for it's music and visuals.
I'm not finished yet but this is a solid game as pretty much all by "Image & Form Games".
Nice adventure with light metridvania aspects.
Nice world and "the gunk mechanics" functions well.
So far it's definetly easier than the last game i played from them (Steamworld Dig 2) so it's perfect for veterans and gaming newcomers.
Also definitely has a chill vibe that I appreciate.
8/10 from me
The story is just okay, I notice some rushed bits that didn't feel too naturally resolved, but it does the job.
The visuals are pretty cool, the caracter design feels close to great but personally the proportions and textures feel a bit off to me, sorry to say.
The exploration is pretty enjoyable, for a short game, the linearity doesn't substract from the experience, you look around while going throught the story and that's enough to get everything you need.
The platforming is a bit janky with the yellow paint bits which are the only ledges you can grab onto, even if it made sense to grab on unpainted parts of that same ledge. The one thing i praise is that despite that, no mistakes felt out of my control or overly punished, so it's pretty enjoyable.
The combat does the job, the game is basically about removing the gunk so having dozens of enemy types would have been bad, having each of them be defeated in different ways is a plus too.
At last, scanning stuff was good at the start, and the problem it has isn't that you have to keep doing it, but that you actually barely have to do it after instead.
I looking for things to scan in new areas and felt disappointed that several structures had no info about them. I can count the non-essential artificial stuff you can scan with one hand, and one of them is a chair, not even forcefields.
In conclusion, game's good, doesn't make itself unnecessarily long or complex. It has flaws but they're bearable and nothing close to gamebreaking.
After playing this game on steam I sent an email to the developers asking them if they would be willing to put this game on GOG and... They listened! Oh my god, thank you so much!!! Yes the game is short and I wish it had much more content. I would gladly pay for more DLC for this game. I personally loved every minute of it! Am I giving the game a higher score because of my love for the developers since they decided to put the game here? Definitely Yes! Should you still get it and play it? Absolutely! It's a hidden gem in my book!
All aspects of the game are painless and satisfying. You'll be exploring simple but pretty levels with non-frustrating 3D platforming. The story is a fairly typical alien planet adventure, with plucky characters and ancient mysteries. Your main activity will be cleaning up gunk and collecting resources. There are also straightforward environmental puzzles, and even some combat, though it's a trivial and unnecessary addition to the game.
The gunk cleaning is super satisfying. The animation is smooth and visceral, and the burst of color you get when you fully clean an area feels like your parents telling you they are proud of you.
I wasn't wowed. I definitely wasn't challenged. But I enjoyed The Gunk a lot.
