The Case of the Golden Idol

I didn't rush to play this when I first heard about it, mainly because all the character portraits kind of grossed me out. Dead honest. However, when I had heard about just how good of a detective game it was, I decided to buy it when it was on sale. If I had known exactly how much fun I would have with it, I would've paid full price. It only holds your hand a minimal amount, letting you do most of the work when it comes to connecting the dots in each scene you're presented with. It was immensely satisfying to go from being completely clueless to understanding every aspect of a mystery. The overall story was also pretty interesting, with plenty of twists, turns, and compelling motivations. Even with some flaws, mainly in the UI, I cannot rate this anywhere below a five for how smart and unique this game is.

This game has a simple and clear structure in which you observe scenes and collect names/places/verbs/etc to plug into a narrative mad-libs style as you untangle the scene. I was enjoying every second of the game up to chapter 4, where I realized that the end was near. The final conclusion scenes felt a bit abrupt. I can't quite put my finger on why, but the ending felt a bit unsatisfying. The gameplay is great. It is a very fast game though. Probably not much replayability. I'd give it a 4.5 if that was an option.

Interesting take on point and click with puzzle solving. Enjoyed every minute of working my brain to deduce what was going on in each scenario. The macabre storyline also grabs your attention as you see the lives of the characters play out in grim fashion. If you like brain teasers, you won't regret giving this game a try.

Just play it if you like detective games.
