During the eternal struggle of the Alliance of Free Races against the Army
of Shadows, an aged gremlin archaeologist Mortimer MacGuffin discovers the
secret repository that houses a legendary artifact! Knowing that this
ancient treasure could turn the tide of war, the Army of Shadows sends
their best agents to seize it. At the same time four unlikely heroes from
the Alliance are drawn into the crisis: a cute gnome Wilbur, a stunningly
attractive wood elf princess Ivo, and a brash pirate Nate with his furry
companion, the mysterious Critter.
The Book of Unwritten Tales is a classic point-and-click adventure game
with a cornucopia of humorous references. Whether it gently lampoons a
particularly popular MMO or the stereotypical fantasy conventions, it’s
sure to put a knowing smile on the face of even the most hardened
adventurer! If you're looking for a comedic relief from all the super-serious plots of modern games, this beautifully-presented point-and-click adventure will be perfect for you.
Travel through a beautifully presented world that is a twisted image of almost every popular fantasy land you’ve visited in games, movies, and books.
Help a pack of hapless heroes to solve over 150 mind-boggling puzzles and discover more than 300 items that can be used and combined.
Meet a cast of crazy characters - from two-headed ogres and vegetarian dragons to good-natured zombies.
I have never been a fan of fantasy, so I wasn't really interested in this game at first ( I only bought it because it was on sale and seemed to be a funny game), however, I'm really glad that I bought it as I really enjoyed it. The story may not be so fresh and puzzles are not so challenging, but the characters are funny and likeable, especially Wilbur, the cute gnome who is innocent, loyal and courageous. It took me about 20 hours to finish, so it is fairly a big game. The graphics and music are great, too. I would recommend this game if you like games like Sam&Max or Monkey Island.
it is overall a nice adventure, great graphics and sound. The characters are fun and colorful. My gripe is that especially in the first chapters the game leans mostly on jokes and and scenes borrowed from other games and films, and these are not only hinted at but lifted nearly word for word.. The puzzles to find the book are one for one taken from the Indiana Jones movie. They even use the soundeffects. Later on the hints get subtler, and some are really great like playing an MMORG in a fantasy world.
Another issue I had that some of the quest items are nearly impossible to find, as the active area is often quite small and the coursor (at least on the MAC port I played) sometimes just not registering the changes.
But all in all a nice game to spend a few hours with an overall good story.
Fun, witty, countless references to classical point-and-click adventure games (e.g. the Monkey Island series), as well as to pop culture - all of this turns out to be a tad-too-easy but still very pleasant adventure.
This is a wonderful oldschool adventure game. It has its share of pixelhunting and somewhat illogical puzzles but for some reason in this particular Book of Unwritten Tales this is charming and not annoying. Buy this game. Play this game. So that there can be more like it and the story could go on!
The game has a very sophisticated humour, often times indirectly refering to classic ancestors of adventure games and some popular d&d related movies. There are some places in a game which made me burst with laughter. Graphics, music, effects and story line are very well refined and provides you a great pleasure to take part in this adventure. Even though hardcore fans of this genre might say that this game often 'leads' you through puzzles, but I really found it quite enjoyable. Puzzles are still interesting, you have to think, but you don't get stuck for hours on something unimportant and that is why this game is great to play. Can't wait to play the next game!
