Description
A war is brewing in Aventásia.

During the eternal struggle of the Alliance of Free Races against the Army of Shadows, an aged gremlin archaeologist Mortimer MacGuffin discovers the secret repository that houses a legendary artifact! Knowing that this ancient treasure could turn the tide of war, the Army of Shadows sends their best agents to seize it. At the same time four unlikely heroes from the Alliance are drawn into the crisis: a cute gnome Wilbur, a stunningly attractive wood elf princess Ivo, and a brash pirate Nate with his furry companion, the mysterious Critter.

The Book of Unwritten Tales is a classic point-and-click adventure game with a cornucopia of humorous references. Whether it gently lampoons a particularly popular MMO or the stereotypical fantasy conventions, it’s sure to put a knowing smile on the face of even the most hardened adventurer! If you're looking for a comedic relief from all the super-serious plots of modern games, this beautifully-presented point-and-click adventure will be perfect for you.
  • Travel through a beautifully presented world that is a twisted image of almost every popular fantasy land you’ve visited in games, movies, and books.
  • Help a pack of hapless heroes to solve over 150 mind-boggling puzzles and discover more than 300 items that can be used and combined.
  • Meet a cast of crazy characters - from two-headed ogres and vegetarian dragons to good-natured zombies.

Remarkably good.

The first thing I noticed about this game was how it didn't look even remotely 'ancient' - this could easily be a modern indie game. I was never a fan of point-and-click adventures, but this one has made me reconsider. It's silly, irreverent, graphically brilliant, and very funny. It also looks like it could be a nice casual brain-teaser. Of all the games I've bought from GOG, this one is the one that stands out as the real keeper.

Good until it's not

I found this game fun enough. Played it for the first time a little while ago. I stopped though because the puzzles started to make no sense which was causing me to get stuck. Minor puzzle spoilers ahead.... One example is you had to light something on fire, but you couldn't walk past a guard with a light source. I tried finding a way to light the item at the place I needed to for quite some time before I looked up how to do the quest and you have to put the lit torch in your backpack so it doesn't provide light. You can't put a lit torch in your backpack like that....... Also another one there was a cannon ball falling on a plank of wood which would bend and the cannon ball would fall off......the solution after I looked it up is to use a cushion.......that so wouldn't work. Anyways that was about half way through the game.....it just falls apart, puzzle wise.

Charming adventuring, if a bit too easy

The Book of Unwritten Tales is a beautifully realised, heavily tongue-in-cheek fantasy adventure game that errs on the side of cliché, breaking of the fourth wall and gaming references. It's hard to classify this game though, as it's rated 12+, but often feels geared towards younger children, while at the same time referencing things more familiar to an older RPG/adventure gaming audience. As a result it can feel a bit confused, and the frequent jokes become a bit tiresome, not helped by clunky, often long-winded dialogue. However, the interface is slick and easy to grasp, and the puzzling is generally logical if a bit too easy. Overall it's a good game, perhaps not very re-playable but it has a charm and entertainment enough. Oh, and if you find a Crumpled Note, you can right-click it; never had to do it with anything else, but… yeah.

I feel cheated by the reviews below

This is a bad game. The puzzles are easy i predictable, you have access to maximum of 4-5 locations/screens at a given time, so there isn't much room to get stuck. The story isn't bad, but the beginning of the adventure is long and the ending seems rushed (you get to 'save the world' for like 30 minutes). If you want to play a "comedy-fantasy" kind of thing you should choose Simon the Sorcerer 2, I guess it is quite hard by todays standards, but even using the walkthrough you'll have much more fun. If you just want a good adventure game, there are dozens of better choices, even if you a beginner. Don't get me wrong, it's not like that one is unplayable. The problem is you forget about it and the characters in it about 5 minutes after you finished it.

meh...

Funny enough, but not up to the standards of Simon the Sorcerer, DoTT or Monkey Island. POS: Simple enough interface, good jokes, riddles tough enough but not too tough. NEG: *very* primitive animations, uncomfortable UI/GUI for switching characters *extremely* primitive (as in: lacking) animation and inventiveness in regards to objects, inventory, etc. All in all: meh... you could have done so much better with a little more effort, guys.
