Beast inside

I'm incredibily delighted with this game. While others attempt to mix genres with irregular and contrived results (hiorror and drama in "Outlast 2" or "The Medium", science-ficition and horror in "Amnesia:Rebirth") "The Beast Inside" succeeds in mixing everything that thrills and excites about horror & adventure & spy stories. Exciting and endlessly surprising, it ticks so many boxes, and it ticks them sooo right, that as a player you can happily ignore a couple of bugs and some physical clunkiness that in other cases would be unforgivable. Besides, loading screens may last a bit too long. And, hey, a better, more imaginative "You Are Dead" screen or transition wouldn't hurt. But, all in all, it's a well written, well designed, entertaining and suspenseful game, packed with interesting puzzles and many plot twists. Literally, you don't know what's going to happen in the next episode. One of the best horror games I've played in a while, an amazing mix of "The Evil Within", "Outlast", "Sherlock Holmes" among others.

Sophisticated Horror

First of all, I think this game (and possibly its genre as a whole) requires a certain level of openmindedness and imagination in order to be found appealing and satisfying. I would describe The Beast Inside as sophisticated and intense, but not everyone will be able to recognize and appreciate that. Especially not if one is looking for straightforward action, little story and lots of killing of overpowered monsters with fancy armor and weaponry (which is the quite opposite of 'sophisticated' by my personal book). This game takes place in your mind as much as it does on the screen before you. If you can easily immerse yourself in a psychologically dark environment and engage in reflection and speculation, then The Beast Inside is a very rewarding and memorable experience. It also helps to have a fascination and some knowledge of the human mind. In response to some of the reviews - don't forget that it's easy to mock what is not understood.

They tried

Was interested in this game since early demo, was excited, but never had time to play it. Now, I've finally finished the game and quite dissapointed. From technical point of view the game is good - good surroundings, well done sound design that builds atmosphere. Gameplay mechanics are clunky, but not the worst part of the game. Monsters are standard and forgettable. The biggest problem of the game is the plot. Having 2 story lines - one taking place in 1860's and one in 1970's and talking about the connection between the main protagonist and his great-great granddad sounded like a great find at first. But the realization proved very poor. 1970's story is a paranoia/detective story that haas only a bad walking simulator (bad because of the poor mechanics and many segments introduced in the game that had no purpose, just to extend the length) and no horror elements at all. 1860's is a classic gothic-horror style story that is actually somewhat interesting to follow and play. And every chapter (there are 14 total) we suddenly jump from horror to detective and back, which completely breaks the narrative. What's even wors, both stories are incredibly predictable and incredibly loosely connected. Starting chapter 3 or 4 most players can guess how the stories will end. I still hoped that maybe there will be some intersting plot twist, that finally will connect well both stories together and make it worth the time spent. But in the finale nothing really happens, stories end as expeced and there is still no real connection revealed between two story lines, apart from ancestral bond. Not to mention that multiple plot holes, in particularly in detective story, are just ignored. There are also over issues that were noted before: plain and useless dialog lines, lack of logic in characters behaviour, pletora of cheap jumpscares. But for me the main dissapointment was failure to deliver the stories connection - authors had a good idea, but never figured out how to develop it

more chase game then horror

The game has incredibly good graphics and some very interesting approaches. Unfortunately, I only found the first 3 chapters really horror-heavy, the rest was more like running for your life simulator. The plot was also very predictable. And sadly there were some bugs in Chapter 10 in particular, which is why I had to redo it several times. But it was a really thrilling experience.

Good! ...For What it is

Beast Inside is essentially a sequence-heavy walking sim. It is a completely linear, story-driven experience. These on-the-rail types are not my favorite genre, personally. That said, I resigned myself to just sit back and let it happen to me. It was pretty unique, and overall enjoyable. Visual and audio teams did a great job! Everything felt very crafted and unique. Great soundtrack. Certain aspects of game design, however, did not feel thoroughly fleshed out. While the ability to open drawers/doors/cabinets adds immersion, it really is superficial and bears no real function. There's really nothing useful to find except for occasional matches or fuel (or sometimes a note for story), and usually there's no real need to utilize either one. The story is primary, and touches of immersive sim are only present to slightly augment the game's atmosphere. Puzzles are fairly simple, which keeps things moving along, but they do not seem to add much to the story. Beast Inside is similar to the Frictional Penumbra and Amnesia series, though a little more confused about what it's trying to accomplish. The story, visuals and music alone maintained my interest to the end. Would recommend! Would recommend on sale if this genre is not exactly your thing.
