Perfect Remake

After some initial rough bumps in the road, by now BTT is a dead easy recommendation to anyone who remembers the game series fondly from way-back-when, or anyone who wants to check out what an old-school RPG can be like, using modern means. Krome managed to improve the old game in so many ways, from shared inventory to unifying the game rules for part 1 through 3, and beyond that: The visuals! Man, the visuals. All this while keeping as close to the original games as possible, and through what is called "Legacy Mode" the chance to play the games pretty much with the mechanics as they were in the originals. All over, an amazing product.

Masterful Remaster

This is how a remaster ought to be done- polish the look while staying true to the theme, add some convenience and technological features and interface improvements- I have to say it was a job well done and the fact I can play this over and over again with the improved sound and graphics and interface without the clunkiness of an emulator is just gravy! The sprites are the same just look better which is great and adds to nostalgia factor. I mean the hobbit that looks like a lecherous old dwarf ready to stab you with carving knife brings back so many memories! The surroundings are a lot more alive and being able to look around is a nice added feature. The auto-map- I earned my auto-map after years and years of drawing maps on graph paper... but if I wanted I could always go back to that- this is a great feature replete with notes, keys, and journal entries to help you stay on track. The customizable options. With legacy mode you can turn on all or some of the legacy features. For example you can turn off auto-save and "save anywhere" or turn off the auto-map. You can turn down the experience requirements for leveling up but at the expense of repeatable memorable battles for grinding. There are so many ways to play it you may just want to try them all. Right now my favorite set up is: Keep leveling legacy so I can grind the battles I loved to grind. Turn auto-map and save anywhere on. Those are just convenience perks for me. Turn on new inventory management. Turn on cross content features. This allows some spells and bard songs to be used in all three titles. The bestiary and other features are really cool to follow and keep track. It gives an incentive to the completionist in me to find those unique- though unnecessary- battles with one of a kind monsters. I am particularly happy with the controller support. You can do everything you need to do from the controller as it ought to be. A+, 5*, 10/10, :)

Great remake

Really brings me back to when I played this game on the C64. I remember this game as being really brutal and killing me several times. I figured I was just too young to understand this game, and I was, but seems it was not the main reason I kept dying so much... this game is very brutal. Somehow they have managed to add some 3D graphics to the city you walk around in without making it feel out of place. It keeps feeling like the classic game, with the same controls and same combat. It is probably not for everyone, but its a nice change of pace to try one of these games that were one of the games to lay the foundations for RPG games as we know them today.

Wonderful

What a wonderful work. I don't really know the original but I'm into old games. I was searching for a way, to catch up on this old gem. The work done by InXile is just wonderful. With the Patch to 1.09 it now works with Linux wine and is finally playable. It adds some comfort functions like a minimap to the original and as I learned in Podcasts adjusts the game balance. The result is a polished gem from the past. It's long ago, that a game instantly sucked me in and made me just want to explore and play it. Here it is. I'm so much looking forward for the next parts and more stuff like this. It's just wonderful and amazing. Thanks a lot.

Faithful to the series...

... with slight enhancements to the games. Short review: A lovingly crafted rework of the original games, with plenty for old and new school players to discover and get excited about. If you've ever wondered what the fuss is about, this is a great way to get into the series and still get the feel without it being overly punishing.
