LOAD TIMES FROM HELL...

Got the DC since critics said it fixed the "problems" it had upon it's first release. Got playing and found it was nice, nothing special though. Then yesterday there was a mega update 30+ GB. Since then load times are atrocious. My old saves are gone. After the intro loading took more than 10 minutes(!). I had to abort. Deleteing this for good. 10+ minutes loading??? The Witcher 3 doesn't take that long and that is technically FAR superior.

Game crashes

Upgrade to director's cut and now game crashes at startup. Original ran fine. Uninstalled reinstalled and exhausted all other suggetions on support page. A game that might not run for you is not worth buying.

Good game; modern take on old-school RPG

I've seen a lot of comments, positive and negative. I think most of the latter come either from nostalgic purists, whom think it's not close enough to the old BT's (made more than 30 years ago!!), or of people who're used to FP shooters or ARPG's. Also; when launched, the original game DID have many bugs still, which affected ratings as well; but those are now mostly gone with the DC version. Having played through the original, and now almost 300 hours into the DC, I can say that BT4 is a pretty good game. Is it perfect? No, but for an indie game, they've done really well. Some will complain about bugs, but that was more of a problem with the OG at launch, far less so with the DC version. I thought it a very interesting and compelling game. The only thing needed to thoroughly enjoy it - aside from a keen drift for exploration and a waft of RPG-love - is to realize it's an indie game and not an AAA game of some big-shot studio, so manage your expectations (it's NOT a Witcher 3). But if you don't sweat the small stuff, love a modern take on an old-school RPG with puzzle-elements in it, and want to have a go at an interesting grid-based combat-system, you're bound to have fun. The combat was engaging and intricate, the small-talk of the characters endearing and funny, the atmospheric vibe amazing and fairytale-ish, and the Gaelic music absolutely wonderful and captivating. The puzzles were about at the right level for me: not too difficult, but not too easy neither (though they get progressively harder). But if you're less puzzle-inclined: the DC has a song now that let's you bypass most puzzles if you're not fond of that. It also has master-crafted weapons now, and it has an extra, large(ly) combat-oriented high-level dungeon (Haernhold) as well. It has a good vibe, and while one can always find some room for further improvements, all in all, it's one of the better indie RPG's I played in years. I would highly recommend it for the target audience as described.

Worthy of the Title

As someone who played the original Bard's Tale Trilogy when they first came out, this was the game that lured me back into crpg's after being away for many years, and it did not disappoint. My experience was that it felt like a Bard's Tale game, while adding a lot of new things and updated graphics the originals of course didn't have. The puzzles were fun, the turn-based combat was challenging and the magic and items were great. If you grew up with or just like old school crpg's this game is a perfect "modern" successor in a great legacy world.

Fun and Nostalgic

Bards Tale 4 is a updated version of the classic RPGs I grew up playing. It has a good, turn-based combat system, an interesting but not too complex class system, and fun and challenging, but solvable puzzles. The music is amazing, especially if you're into Celtic folk (which I am not), but the score is original and haunting. The story is strong. The art is very good, and the puzzles look and feel cool. The bad: sometimes it is hard to tell where you can and cannot walk. The controls are buggy on Linux (not sure about other platforms). At higher levels, near the end of the game, combat loses much of its challenge, and your party becomes over-powered. If you never played the old turn-based RPGs, such as Bard's Tale, Might and Magic, and Ultima, you might find this game primitive compared to something like Skyrim. If you're an old head like me or if you just have a penchant for retro, this game should be a good time.
