the good, the bad and the old school

Directors cut is great ! no bugs so far, diffculty settings are flexible from easy to ultra hard to 80 style or mixed. it has classic grid based navigation option for same retro flair. ok, the art director totally mess-up with dwarf or elven design but still its great CRPG !

A Lame Genius

BARDS I apparently depleted the gameworld of booze near the end. Why does booze/water not repopulate, even after the enemies have? This is the most disappointing issue of the whole game. COMBAT After 15-20hrs the auras surrounding foes became meaningless. Occasionally a green group (easy) would even give me more trouble than a red (hard). Then, just before Skara Brae burst aflame, the auras reclaimed their meaning with a vengeance. Serious balancing issues. After finding the right attack pattern, I could defeat 99% of enemies using the same strategy, but it still remained satisfying somehow. I love the grid format and the flow of combat, and the skills system is near perfect. IMMERSION Extremely beautiful world filled with fantastic music. I found myself stopping many times throughout just to marvel at the artistic beauty of the gameworld. The puzzles offered a consistently enjoyable challenge without ever being unnecessarily confounding. On several occasions I just had to step away from the game and sleep on it, and then usually I'd return to the game with a solution. Very well-made. STABILITY Running the game at max graphics settings at 1080p on a Win7/Ryzen7/Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti system, I experienced these occasional issues (in order from most to least common): -the game hanging after defeating an enemy party, sometimes for >1min -individual enemies freezing upon defeat -enemies floating back and forth across the grid -critical failure (once or twice in >50hrs playtime) This pretty much defeats the purpose of playing on hardcore mode, since frequent saves become vital. I was hesitant to purchase the game at first due to all the bug warnings, but overall it was much better experience than I anticipated. SUMMARY I still loved this game despite its flaws. It's actually one of the finer gaming experiences I've had in recent years. Originality and humor go a long way, and is major talent at work here. The booze shortage killed me. I am likely to revisit.

It's ok, some enjoyment some frustration

Once I fixed my FOV the game was playable for me. I don't typically get motion sickness, but this game was giving me a slight headache after about 20 to 30 minutes of play until I fixed the FOV. Thankfully, this is now in the options. As for gameplay, it is ok. There are some fun interactions and some fun exploration that happens, but there are also a decent number of frustrations. I don't mind returning to an already explored area, but this game takes that to a new level, at least for those that want to solve all the side quests they've picked up. It's not a matter of being able to handle the side quests due to difficulty -- you just flat out can't get to a side quest objective until you've progressed further in the game. Again, that's not horrible, but this game does this a LOT. I did like a lot of the puzzles, but some of them were just too obtuse and difficult to where it really wasn't that fun anymore. And this game is full of puzzles to solve. In fact, I'd say this is more of a puzzle game than anything else, which wouldn't be a problem if some of the puzzles made more sense. The level of difficulty for battles starts out really hard, but then gets easier in the middle of the game, but the last fight is REALLY hard. Honestly, it's really unbalanced. There are periods of super difficult battles and those that are really easy. Overall, pretty unbalanced play in my opinion. You can (and sometimes have to) reconfigure your skills to deal with some of the tougher fights, including the final boss fight. I picked this up on sale and as long as you can get it on sale, then I'd say it's ok and worth playing. But at normal price, I'd stay away.

A broken hope.

I doubt many people would even try to play it but I would share an honest review on this. I really love the idea, the battle mechanics, and many of the art and animations. However, the game feels incomplete. There are obvious sniched parts of the game. It is clear that one team worked on the battle mechanics, and somewhat snitched it with the RPG elements but still, they look incomplete. Some parts of the world look nice, and some are actually good, but some are distinctly bad, they are not polished, seem unthought, and as if they rushed to release the game as if the budget ran out and they made whatever they could to make the final push. This resulted in a game that looked weird, incomplete, and in some ways bad. There were numerous performance problems, and many bugs that made me abandon the game. One in particular happens when you are fighting and it locks some fields or completely messes up the hero selection and options. This happened sooooo often that I finally just gave up and dropped the game altogether. So the verdict is that this game had potential ideas, but was executed very badly (most likely due to budget cuts and release rush) that is such a shame. I love the genre and I would recommend you to try it out, but I am afraid that most likely you would be very disappointed. I hope that there will be a rework on this one or perhaps a someone will make a follow up and improve on the bad parts. Fingers crossed.
