SURVIVAL HAS NEVER BEEN SO PERSONAL

The Alters is an ambitious sci-fi survival game with a unique twist. You play as Jan Dolski, the lone survivor of a crash-landed expedition on a hostile planet. To survive, you must form a new crew for your mobile base.

Using a substance called Rapidium, you create alternative versions of Jan—THE ALTERS—each one shaped by a different crucial decision from the protagonist’s past.

As you navigate through survival and moral dilemmas, you will explore a branching narrative filled with captivating character dynamics and challenging decisions.

At the same time, you’re challenged to reflect on one of life’s fundamental questions – do we shape our destiny or does it shape us? This makes your bid for survival a deeply personal experience.

Create Your Alters

Use the quantum computer onboard your base to simulate alternate outcomes of your past choices and uncover Jan’s different life paths. Each Alter brought to life thanks to the remarkable properties of Rapidium comes with unique skills and emotional depths. These variations offer both opportunities and challenges as you navigate personal struggles and manage the fragile dynamics of your crew.

Survival Mechanics

To operate the mobile base, you’ll need to explore the planet’s surface in search of precious resources, like metals and organics. Yet venturing outside the safe haven comes with the risk of exposing you and your Alters to various deadly anomalies as well as the ever-present radiation of the sun. That’s why you must pay attention to the in-game day and night cycle and plan your daily activities wisely!

Branching Storylines

Navigate a narrative rich with moral dilemmas and branching paths. Your choices will shape Jan’s relations with his Alters which then will impact their journey and lead you to multiple outcomes and endings.

Expand your base

Gathered resources can be used in different ways – create necessary items or develop your base with additional modules like Research Lab or Social Room. Sometimes you will have to choose between creating items specially for your Alters and ones that could push the mission forward, like Anomaly Detectors or Radiation Filters. The burden of every decision lies solely on your shoulders as you will never be able to satisfy everyone’s needs.

Exploration

The planet features unique biomes and secrets waiting to be found, but deadly anomalies stand in your way. Levitating rocks and eerie distortions of reality attract attention immediately, while other singularities remain invisible to the naked eye and require special tools to uncover. In all cases, you must be extra careful - or face the risk of instant death, radiation-induced injuries, and even disintegration of time and space. Also, you may want to avoid exploring the planet during hours when intense radioactivity can eat right through your suit. Happy travels!

The emotional sci-fi story

Jan Dolski is about to face the answers to the essential “what if?” question in the form of alternative versions of himself. This makes the predicament he is in even more daunting as you slowly discover the impact every choice has on Jan’s survival.

The Alters poses you with life’s most nagging questions

Not Profound--Pretentious.

Unpopular take incoming. tl;dr, it insists upon itself. Gameplay's alright, has everything I want. Engaging primary gameplay loop (exploration), compelling secondary loop (management) and driving tertiary loop (sunrise). Resembles both This War of Mine and XCom. Music was well done, even if I'm not a fan, I can't complain about characterisation like that--the alters were the ones listening to it. Graphics hit a sweet spot of 'realistic', but still stylised so it's not uncanny. As much as I'm sick of seeing magenta, its use made sense to paint Ally Corp. in a 'we care about PR first and foremost' kind of light. UI was alright, though very buggy, elements that should disappear (like the moodlets) didn't always. Subtitles frequently mispelled too. The writing killed it though. I can overlook melodrama, cringe, and a couple of the Alters being caricatures, all as matters of taste. What I can't overlook is the Telltale Games-esc false sense of 'Choices Matter' presented at the end of Act 2. In my playthough, I put the interests and needs of the Alters first, championing them to the company. In the moral decision in Act 2, I kept them in the loop and made sur ethey knew what was up. Now, I didn't expect everyone magically getting along just because I was the errand boy, I'm not precious about 'getting my way', but if I realise during gameplay none of my prior decisions factor into the outcome, the writer didn't stick the landing. With how hard the game yells at you for being a monster either way, it comes off mean spirited, like I'm being mocked for making the best of a no-win situation. Referencing philosophers by name should have been a red flag the game would be made to look clever at my expense. I like 11Bit, their prior games had morality as a skill issue: with grit, you could find a better way. How did they screw it up so hard here? P.S. I had Doctor and Psych, why was Scientist still doing the medical story beats? Conclusion: Angrily dropped after 20 hours.

Unique and Intriguing Sci Fi

Good resource management gameplay. And as someone who can get bored easily, as story that is keeping me hooked and wanting to continue.

Wonderfully surprising.

The Alters is a thoughtfully balanced survival and base management sim serving as the vehicle to a well written and voice acted character narrative set in an extraordinary sci-fi setting in the vein of film greats like Polaris and Sunshine, and reality-bending interactive mysteries like Returnal and Signalis. While the survival elements can create moments of urgency and anxiety, they never detracted from the focus of a narrative that explores finding one's self--or selves--by answering the question "what if" on the life choices that shape who we become through our environment and experiences. While the introduction of the main character was initially worrying as a cliche 30-something with alcoholic daddy issues, the introduction of additional characters who are all different life-path versions, or "Alters" of the original created a layered dynamic and introduced narrative interactions that feel meaningful and personal. The alternate versions of your character will take orders from you as part of the base-management sim, but your interactions with them, and even their interactions with each other will affect thier ability and open new narrative paths that feel organic and meaningful. The survival and base-building elements are decent on thier own, but would not capture the attention of a longer play time without the narrative. They are intruduced gradually to not overwhelm, and are supported with the ease of a well-executed unser interface, automation, and support from the extra Alter characters. The weaving of the narrative with the more gamey elements is what makes this game special. Add to the story a background of corporate politics and greed that seems it should be predictable but isn't, and the ever-increasing mysteries of reality-bending time and space, The Alters is an intriguing play that is hard to put down.

Excellent Narrative Base Survival

This game reminds me heavily of Frostpunk, which was an fantastic survival city building game. Like Frostpunk, Alters feels streamlined - stripping away some complexity without feeling as if its compromising depth. And just like Frostpunk, the scenario or narrative provides a great context for the gameplay to hang from. The actual mechanical game loop is fairly addictive, but the sci-fi narrative adds a great flavoured layer - you always want to just have one more go. The game mechanics also seem pitched just right, so frustration never kicks in. Perhaps I'm still in the perfect goldilocks period with the game, but I really should stop typing here and get back to the game. A few hours in and my only criticism would be the very slow dialogue - this may just be limited to the english language version. The voice acting is adequate, but not compelling. But perhaps I'm being impatient because I just want to get back to the core loop...

Great looking game with unique story

Small technical problems aside the game seems really good. Feels awesome to explore the hostile planet and think about philosophical, ethical and psychological issues the game presents!
