Description
The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

Traditionally, many fantasy RPGs are about killing things, clearing up dungeons, and being a hero. Now, there is nothing wrong with mindless fun and wish fulfillment, but we serve a different meal here. Quoting from one of the reviews:

“Well, if you want a hardcore, heavy metal roleplaying experience that challenges you, this is the ticket. Otherwise, take a pass. The game is vicious, both in its lack of morality and its merciless systems. If you want to be the hero of a story, run and don’t look back. If you want to be Attia of the Julii or be a power player, this is your RPG.”

The focus of the game is not on killing monsters, but rather on dealing with fellow humans and factions, trying to survive – easier said than done – and making a name for yourself. Naturally, to accommodate all that scheming, plotting, and backstabbing, we give the player plenty of choices, from multiple solutions to quests to different paths you can take through the game. You (and your actions) will determine who your friends and enemies are. There are no default good and bad guys.
  • 23 skills, ranging from Dagger and Critical Strike to Disguise and Persuasion to Alchemy and Lore.
  • Tactical combat system, featuring a flexible set of standard attacks, special attacks such as whirlwind and impale, and aimed attacks at different body parts.
  • 8 weapon types: daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, each with individual traits.
  • Non-combat quest resolutions and a well-developed diplomatic path.
  • Over 100 quests, taking you to 20 locations: towns, outposts, archeological digs, sealed places of Power, underground facilities, and temples.
  • Each situation has multiple ways of handling it, based on your skills, reputation, and connections.
  • An interesting world with rich history and unclear future that your actions can shape into seven very different game endings.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons with different properties, brew different potions, experiment with Greek's fire and black powder.
  • Hundreds of items, ranging from weapons and armor to scrolls, tools, flasks, and pre-war relics.

Potentially brilliant, totally ruined.

If only there were an option to turn off the embarrassingly bad, repetitive, fight banter it would be so much easier to appreciate all the good things about this game. It's very clear that a lot of thought went into making this, and it's equally obvious that while the person doing that thinking was putting his soul into making this game, another part of the creative team was totally dedicated to breaking his heart. The fight banter is the most unavoidable iteration of this, but there are plenty of others. The over all impression is very much like trying to appreciate a stunningly beautiful orchestral concert while the person seating beside you is farting continuously. You regret walking out, but it's worse to stay. It's a real shame.

Roleplaying at its finest

Only bought this since I got Colony Ship on discount and wanted to support the devs and make up the price, and here I am trying this out first since I've read it's short for one playthrough, and I'm not saying it was the Aliens, but it was most likely the Aliens, and I'm absolutely LOVING IT! So many paths, so many builds, so many ways to do the quests, and all decisions matter. I think I'll end up playing this a while until I get to Colony Ship, at least 2 or 3 playthroughs, since I can already see every playthough is going to be different based on character build. Highly recommended.

Old school is not always better

God, the game might have wondrous story, but I wouldn't call the gameplay and general useability of the game as "old school", more like "obsolete". How did the dev team not use a proper designer to help them with the UX of the game, is beyond me. I don't care much about cool awesome graphics, I still think Deus Ex is uncomparably superior to Deus Ex Mankind Divided; but these graphics are worse than Baldur's Gate 1, and the animations are so stiff that take out of any immersion the game might have had. The transition between different parts of the quests are a horrible idea, just a fade to black and you appear in another place, two lines of dialogs, another fade to black, then in another place; no continuity whatsoever. The combat, while I understand is not the focus of the game, is atrocious, no other way to put it. A lot of people seem to really love this game, but I couldn't, for the life of me.

Must Buy

I'll start by saying that I've struggled to find any games that have held my interest for a while now. I can honestly say that this is the first game, in I don't know how long, that kept my interest from the moment I started it, to the moment I finished it - and beyond that. I've since replayed it multiple times, and have loved every moment of it. I cannot recommend enough.

Should be more RPG like this one!

There is no right or wrong way to play the game. Only your own! I enjoyed a lot the story and the universe! Gameplay is good and choices you make really have an impact on the scenario. The fighting system leave the player a lot of combat style which can be really interesting compare to other games. Also, it's nice to see you can go forward in the game without having to fight but with diplomacy and ruse.
