Welcome to the terminally cute, seriously warped world of Willy Beamish. You'll face neurotic yuppie parents, teachers pushed over the edge, a ghostly grandfather back from the grave, the baby-sitter from hell, a pet jumping frog on steroids and a plot to blow the city's sewer system sky high. It's chaotic, it's juvenile, it's definitely deranged and you're gonna love every minute of it.

A LOT of my gaming back in those days was with Sierra/Dynamix classics. Last time I went to visit my parents they were in the process of moving out and were throwing things out. I had shoe boxes of floppies. I grabbed a small stack of my favorites to save from the dump and Willy was in there. Thank you GOG for adding this one to the library. You guys are amazing. Now I need to catch back up to where I left off and see if I can finally beat it... =)
I originally played this on the Sega CD and loved it. The load times killed this game though on Sega Cd. I saw recently this was related on GOG and I remember reading that the Dos/Amiga version was better. I figured why now throw $5 down and test it out. WOW the game is so much faster. There basically isn't any load time with this version. This version is so much more enjoyable. I can't wait to see how the rest of the game plays out and how much I can remember from my childhood.
‘The Adventures of Willy Beamish’ was the Dynamix adventure game that I had wanted most. The ads for it back in the day suggested it to be a game like a Saturday morning cartoon. It turned out it was anything but.
‘TAoWB’ is really for grown-up audience. It’s filled with references and parodies that only adults at the time would understand. The puzzles can be difficult and obtuse, and they’re often timed. Mistakes often lead to immediate failure, meaning much trial and error is needed to complete the game without help.
The cartoon aesthetics belie the game’s mature content, yet the tone is inconsistent. One moment there’d be fart jokes, frog jumping contests, and ninjas, the next there’d be busty nurses, shady businesses, and references to West Side Story. Early parts of the game may suggest there’re multiple solutions to problems, but the game is quite restrictive overall. It may seem like you can carry out much pre-teen mischief, but you really must behave to win. The story doesn’t make sense even if it’s written for adults.
‘TAoWB’ would be easy to hate if it weren’t for the graphics. It’s great looking game, with detailed, hand-drawn, and painted backdrops; and characters DO look like they’re from Saturday morning cartoons. I’ve played both floppy disk and CD versions, and I think the former is superior. The static art of the former fit better with the game, than the lip-synced animation of the latter. The talking animation looks off enough to show that they’re an afterthought. The CD version also has bad voice acting. The sound quality is inconsistent, the narration and voice acting are annoying, and some actors were clearly miscast.
While the flaws of ‘TAoWB’ are glaring, I still recommend it. Before ‘TAoWB’, there wasn’t any mature adventure games that looked quite like it. Where it failed was later done much better by games like ‘Day of the Tentacle’ and ‘Full Throttle’. ‘TAoWB’ is a pioneer in that regard, and that itself makes it worth checking out.
runs great so happy its finally on here ,brings me back to my childhood, a very good point and click, now if onlybthey would release Rise of the Dragon here......
The Adventures of Willy Beamish is one of the best point and click adventure games from way back when this genre was top dog. I'd put it in my top 3. It has impressive and detailed backgrounds, goofy characters, and a lot of funny dialog. The puzzles aren't as horribly obtuse as in other point and click games either. Willy Beamish was made by Dynamix too so that means lots of elaborate game over sequences. Honestly I love them. In many Sierra games when you get a game over you're simply treated to a little paragraph saying why it's game over, but in Dynamix games you get this whole big production. Me and my whole family have had a lot of fun with this game throughout the years.
