The famous game remastered in a new 25th Anniversary Edition!

The father and mother of all 'Haunted Mansion' games!
Winner of multiple gaming awards and “No. 1 Rated Game of 1994”.
"The new standard in interactive entertainment." - Bill Gates (Founder of Microsoft Corporation, 1993)

Henry Stauf's mansion has been abandoned for as long as anyone dare remember. Stauf was a master toy maker, a maker of amazing puzzles and this strange, eerie, mansion was his greatest creation.
It stands empty, rotting ever since children started dying with his toys near them, ever since six guests came and were never seen again.

Now, you are in the house, moving from one room to another, trying to remember and trying to forget. Because Stauf's game isn't over. There were six guests the world knew about - and there was one other.
The mansion of horror comes to life again and only you can end this mad nightmare and learn the secret of the 7th guest.

The game features:

  • Groundbreaking use of full-motion video and dialogue recorded by live actors in a terrifyingly virtual environment.
  • Bizarre puzzles to solve and games to play.
  • 22 stunningly rendered, devilishly surprising, 3-D rooms await you in this fully explorable haunted mansion.

Where are the "improvements"?

I've bought The 7th Guest five times now. I had the original game, I bought every possible release between that and this one, including the previous GOG release. It's been a decade since I bought the soundtrack, "7/11," from The Fat Man's website. I once transcribed the musical notation for the theme from the piano puzzle. I love this game. ...which is why I wonder why anyone would do this to it. It looks awful compared to the original. The animation is either identical or timed badly--in some places, it is just missing (the opening Trilobyte logo was a mood-setter in the original... now it's just a too-bright screen that cuts out in the middle of the introductory music track, killing the mood). The video looks the same as it ever did (which is not surprising, since foul-ups with its quality are why the entire thing was rewritten to make the characters ghosts, so I can't imagine anyone being able to improve it). The voice-over, like the animation, seems largely identical to the original... except in those places where the timing is off and the dialogue is now rushed and awkward. And, for no reason I can fathom, the subtitles were transcribed (badly) from the audio instead of copied from the script, so they get words wrong frequently, creating grammatically-insane sentences that distract from the story and dialogue. Then there's the "improved" gameplay. Did anyone *really* find it too difficult to watch for the cursor to change as it passed over hotspots in the original? The highlighting doesn't actually accomplish anything except ruining the mood. Frankly, most of the "improved" UI is just insulting to the player's intelligence. On the bright side, the Anniversary Edition comes with the 7th Guest novel, which, while being exactly as good as one would expect a lazy adaptation of a video game in the early '90s to be, was something I desperately wanted as a thirteen-year-old and wasn't able to buy, so this fulfills a twenty-five year desire.

Well, nice try...

Well, nice project, -- however, this clearly needs some work: 1. I am German and want to play in English (as I did 25 years ago), so I changed the audio language to English and restarted the game. Now the game itself (videos, voice-overs, subtitles) is in English all right, but the main menu did not change from German to English, including the voice-overs ("Come back!", "Back for more?" etc.) which is all still in German despite the language change. 2. If I copy the English audio from Assets\T7G\wav\en to Assets\T7G\wav\de to get the English menu sounds, the sound for e.g. "Come back!" when leaving the game is cut off in the middle. 3. The above-mentioned menu voices are way too loud; apparently the volume slider does not work for them. 4. There are quite some typos in the English and German subtitles. 6. The subtitle font is really ugly and does not fit the theme and design of the game. 7. The mouse cursor is a) much too large and b) way too ugly. All these may be minor issues each -- but unfortunately they add up to a quite annoying experience.

Many localisations, shortcuts.

I really appreciate the number of new localisations, the possibility to skip the cut-scenes, the option to highlight all hotspots in each game screen. Shortcuts to save/load, open the map are confortable indeed. Without the source code (due to the harcoded text-pictures are not translatable), this is the best the developer can do.

Pretty OK, if somewhat messy

I do appreciate the features allowing me to skip cutscenes, highlighting hotspots, the easy-to-access map screen, but it feels a little slipshod. I was bummed that the opening title charged ahead without the thunder and the music stings, but perhaps that's due to my system. The "high res" mode is pretty muddy, using a high degree of interpolation that makes everything smear together. You also get a standard cursor, with the old cursor icons appearing as hotspots, which I wasn't a big fan of. Still, it's probably the best modern port of T7G you're gonna get. I appreciate they're giving it any love at all for its anniversary. The extras are worth the price alone, in my opinion.

Yay!

There are several things I like about the anniversary editions: the sound levels are perfectly balanced, there's closed captioning, you can skin scenes and animations, faster movement and puzzle animations. I confess, I still prefer the previous version of The 7th Guest, inlcuded with this edition as the 'legacy edition.' I would love to see an additional option to play with the oringal graphical formatting. The new format does stretch the graphics a little. Plus, I'm not particuarly fond of seeing the corner icons or the pointer arrow. Nevertheless, I think this is a very nice remaster that make some much needed updates to a delightful game.
