Fans know best
This started out back in 2006 or 7, as far as I can remember, as a fan project to develop a 7th Guest / 11th Hour sequel - as Trilobyte had, at the time, been deactivated due to the well known feud between Graeme Devine and Rob Landeros during the production of the 11th Hour. Since then, Landeros reactivated Trilobyte and launched his own Kickstarter for a third instalment in the series, but fell short of the funding, offering his blessing to the already ongoing (and successful) fan project - that I backed. After all these years, it is finally here! I played the Steam version for hours... and the waiting was worth it! Being fans of the original 7th Guest, it can clearly be ascertained that the developers knew exactly what made 7th Guest into the success it was and why it is still a cult classic for a retro crowd. Yes, they did naturally update the game technologically, both in gameplay (as now you can move around with WASD and not just depend on mouse clicks) and in graphics and FMV. One aspect that really pleased me was the fact that despite including updated FMV and graphics, it still maintains that "rough-edgedness" that gives you the feeling that you are truly playing a sequel to the 7th Guest (something that the 11th Hour was unable to do due to technical and story choices. Nostalgia is fed during the game, but it isn't its focus - the puzzles and exploration are. The acting isn't top class, which is a plus, because it maintains its coherence with the original, as it really brings you back to the 90's when this was all new. The music is also coherently put together - updated, yes, original, also, yet still old school midi-based (or at least mimicking it successfully) and transpiring the same atmosphere as the 7th Guest. In summary: if you are a fan of the original 7th Guest, you will love this. If you are not, although you do not need to play the original to get into the game, it does enhance your experience of the 13th Doll if you first play the 7th Guest.
