Description
The 13th Doll is a game created by and for fans of The 7th Guest series! It began as an all volunteer, freeware passion project, but evolved into a fully licensed game.

In the 7th Guest, evil toymaker Henry Stauf built a mansion, and invited 6 guests. A 7th Guest, Tad, snuck in and was trapped there, afflicted by mystifying spirits, dolls and the ghosts of the other guests - until he defeated Stauf.

The 13th Doll ties in with the events of The 7th Guest. A decade after Tad managed to escape the mansion, he is still haunted by the souls, dolls, and Stauf's victims he left behind. So haunted, in fact, that the young man now resides in a mental institution - misunderstood, plagued by guilt and obsessed with one idea: to escape the dreary padded walls of his asylum cell, return to the mansion - the site of his innermost fears - to rescue those he left behind and defeat Stauf once and for all!

Soon, a new doctor by the name of Richmond arrives in the asylum. Naïve to the legacy of Henry Stauf, and equally bewildered and intrigued by the fantastic legend, the staunch rationalist plans to take Tad on a cathartic trip back to the mansion.

This unconventional therapy attempt rapidly turns into a fateful journey, unravelling Tad and Richmond's contrasting worldviews and leading the unlikely duo straight into a horrifying vortex of lies, illusions, lunacy and death. And soon a blood-curdling question arises: Have the two visitors really made their way to Stauf's harrowing home on their own accord or are they mere pawns in a much grander, inescapable scheme?

While playing The 13th Doll, a lot of time will be spent navigating through gloomy sites, concealed rooms and maze areas from an immersive first person perspective. Thanks to the game being developed in Unity3d, this becomes an advanced and engaging experience, as the engine allows free movement and a fully accessible environment in detailed high-definition visuals. For the first time, players will be able to explore every inch of Stauf's residence and face all its eerie inhabitants up close and personal. A plethora of interactive, delightfully animated objects will bring even the most desolate locations to life.

Logic puzzles were an integral part of The 7th Guest's gameplay, and The 13th Doll follows suit. We've designed 26 original brain-teasers, all varying in style and offering a wide array of intellectual challenges. These diabolical creations are found throughout the game - whether it be card tricks, pathfinding and chess challenges, or even artificial intelligence puzzles versus Henry Stauf himself!.

Bonkers, funny, immersive, cheesy, fun

Having played 7th Guest and 11th Hour back in the 1990s (and again in the last couple of years) this is absolutely a love letter to everything good and bad about those games. Cheesy acting is spot on as well as the jarring lighting on the actors and the environments are creepily 3D/not-3D as story and theme demand. Movement is proper point and click and cutscene with the weird rotations and angles exactly as the original games. Puzzles make sense if you disengage some of your higher brain functions although I would have liked a faster hint system. I've missed you Stauf...

Love letter to the 7th Guest Series

A decent, well above average fan effort. A sequel to the series, with a story of its own, yet overloaded with references to the old titles. It has good ideas, even design-wise. Some odd choices, though. The story unfolds via FMV, short ghost visits or Stauf talking. You advance by solving puzzles. One puzzle per room and the reward for solving it can be underwhelming. The game starts in a better, more thought out way than it progresses. There are leaps of logic for motives & actions. But that's how storytelling was in the previous titles, too. You are meant to play as both protagonists to experience the full story. Pros: + (mostly) free 3d exploration + Quite good soundtrack. Revisits the classic tracks, bur has its own theme + Accessibility options! + Map fast travel (may skip optional scenes) + Intuitive map system + Stable, good programming. No crashes, freezes, deadends Middle: * Mostly designed for fans of the original games. Assumes you've played The 7th Guest * Acting leaves something to be desired * Some animations are not that interesting, or feel rehashed * Some revisited puzzles feel rehashed too * Follows the formula of the old titles. Rooms locked with no explanation. Sometimes not apparent what unlocked next * Endings could be more fleshed out. * Collectibles can be frustrating, but completely optional. * No open house mode after finishing the game. * Minor glitches in FMV. * Minor errors & sync issues with subtitles. Cons: - No option to skip cutscenes, animations, dialogue you already watched. - Limited save game slots (10) - Save system seems to store in-registry rather than external files. No cloud saves support. I got my saves wiped once and had to replay. - There is a maze. You have to brute force it (there's no clue in-game for its map). - Tad's path explicitly locks you out of unlocked rooms towards the end. - Some of the lighting for rooms and cutscenes is not good. Some issues with shadows (wrong or missing shadows)

I feel likes it's 1993 all over again!

I have been following this project for YEARS, way before the Kickstarter and I have to say it was well worth the wait! Attic Door Productions has done a fantastic job of capturing and recreating what made The 7th Guest so special. If you were even remotely a fan of the original game you would be doing yourself a disservice by not playing this game.

A worthy successor

I have been waiting for this ever since the idea's inception on the forums, and the wait was well worth it. Not only are there two story paths, but SIX possible endings. Having only completed one of them so far, I can already say that the replay value is worth it. Everything here pays perfect homage to the original games, right down to the music ... I have reached out to the devs to see if it is possible to get a copy of the soundtrack. Gameplay is as close to the original as modern technology made possible - it took me a little while to get used to using the arrow keys in conjunction with the mouse, but once I did it was a piece of haunted cake. I will note that I played this in window mode so that I could have Notepad open for puzzle notes, but did not have any issues toggling back and forth, either. The only issue I had was something which was a problem in the original, too ... occasionally if I was working near the bottom of a screen in a puzzle I would accidentally reboot it, which ... was maddening, but really my own fault. There were some rooms where I could not SEE any difference between the original graphics and the new ones, which is a testament to the love and care that the developers put into this. A job well done by one and all.

It's like playing an actual sequel.

Having played the 7th Guest back in the day (on CD-i nonetheless) I was absolutely captured by the atmosphere the original game set. Sadly, after 11th Hour the series went away and I haven't heard anything back from Trilobyte, there were some talks of a 7th Guest III but that kickstarter sadly went nowhere. When I first heard about this fangame I was naturally sceptical at first but I have to be honest: It definitely exceeded my expectations, it was as if I was playing an actual sequel to the series. The hammy acting, the mood and atmosphere it sets. It's all wonderful. If I have to give it a major flaw it's that it's possible for you to miss puzzles. (Like the 'escape' one in Tad's file in your office to name just one example) although I'm sure this also gives people a lot of replay value to try and see what they missed. As a puzzle game, I really loved how forward the puzzles were, one thing that frustrated me in the 7th Guest and 11th Hour were that some of the puzzles essentially involved moon logic. (The soup can puzzle anyone?) In any case, I had a lot of fun tinkering with the puzzles in this game as some of them were indeed difficult but very cleverly designed. Would love to see this team tackle other games.
