Just as good now as it was then.

This was one of the first CD-Rom games i ever bought, i picked it up back in 95 when i was 14 years old after playing the Demo a few months earlier. I recently just replayed the game on GOG, probably the first time ive played it in at least 15 years and i found it just as engaging as i did all those years ago. Sure its dated as hell but it just has that certain charm that never goes away. To be honest i probably had more fun replaying this than most modern games ive played. A true classic and im looking forward to replaying the other games in the Tex Murphy series. If only we could get 1 more new title, i can only dream.

film noir, thriller, mystery, detective

Quiet good 3d graphics (mixed with real filmed characters) considering when the game came out. The problem is when playing the game on a big monitor, 19" or higher, the resolution used at that time becomes a bit ugly. The music & sound are of good quality. Only minor bugs, nothing worth mentioning. You need a bit of practice to manage the movement interface though, but once you get over all the minor flaws you discover a great game with a good story. Something you see seldom these days, because of the effort that goes in the graphics development-part of the game. When you never had the chance to play UAKM when it came out, you really should check this out now! It'll run even better then back then & you don't need to switch a CD-rom every 10min ;-).

A very decent FMV scifi noir adventure

Tex Murphy is one of those games I discovered only much later, when I started searching for more adventure games and cyberpunk media. Tex Murphy seems to embody the best of those worlds: fine adventure gaming and some cyberpunk elements. This is my first encounter with the series and I'm still a bit on the fence. As for the FMV acting: it's not as bad as Gabriel Knight: Beast Within, but remains wooden to say the least. That being said, for a game designer the title role is hilariously played. Tex acts as any overcliched private dick should act. This game never takes itself too serious and becomes all the better for it. Instead, the wooden acting, 80s hairstyles and fax-machines as the hight of technological advancement give the game a timeless charm. I wish the same could be said for the story: It's only a shallow vehicle for the (excellent) puzzles and there are plenty of plotholes and cheap mechanics to go around. The gameplay can be quite frustrating too. The actual action takes place on a rather tiny screen and the player must constantly switch between movement-mode and action-mode, which can make the pixelhunts quite frustrating. Again, however, it's the hilarious acting that saves the day. There isn't a single response or outcome or death-scene that makes you want to forget about the whole thing. This is one of these games where you end up doing the wrong thing just because you want to know what the great PI in the sky would say about it.

Thank you!!!

Saw this the first time in the late 90's. My copy was, even though original but second hand, a set of badly scratched cd's. never finished it, but loved every minute until it crashed, course of the bad media. Never forgot the game, with the type of film noir feeling, that just catches on right from the start. Even forgot the name of the game, but never the game. now some 20 years later I stumble across it on GOG, was happy even thrilled, had to give it a go. And I tell you.. The graphics, movie like thing, smells 90's in the worst possible ways. The controls are horrible. etc. By todays standards this game would not stand a chance. BUT I will bet that everyone out there that ever even touched this game back then, feel the same way I do. This is A MASTERPIECE! The story / feel is still there. just the fact that I was grabbed by the thing again and this time got to finish it, left it for a year played it and finished it again, the endings not being a big surprise now. counts in my book. Go on give it a go! I dare you. By the time you know Tex, you will want more.. H*** go on get The Pandora Directive while you are at it. I enjoyed that ride too, I hope you will. Thank you GOG for bringing this back to life.
