System Shock® 2 (1999)

This is an absolute must play. This game way lightyears ahead of its time when it came out, and is still frightening and compelling today. It's a shooter, an RPG and a survival game all rolled into one, and wears you down with a unique brand of horror where the lights are always on and you know exactly where the monster is, but your nerves are fraying non the less.

I bought SS2 as soon as it was available and installed it on my MacBook Pro using PlayOnMac. Since it is not supported there yet I started with a new volume with the latest wine and that's it! Everything works as far as I know.

This was the final strike that made me GoG user. Best PC game ever made. GoG version is MUCH easier to install than original (which I have as well). Just remember to get SS2Tools v 5.0, shtup beta 6 and rebirth v2. These really make a difference in game graphics. Also, this game is one of the best Co-op games as well (but play it once through alone first).

I don't understand people's hang up on graphics. It's tragic that people's ability to enjoy a game is dictated by the visual stimulation offered. This game has a fantastic soundtrack, great voice acting, a great storyline, and the overall mood of the game is exactly what it should be. If you're a younger gamer who grew up in a world of better graphics, don't let the aged look of the game deter you from experiencing one of the very greatest examples of art in the video game world.

System Shock 2 is 14 years old, yet it's still scary, especially on impossible difficulty that on I just finished the game, the difficulty where even the tiniest breeze was able to render my NAVY character to KIA. But this game is the prime example that if the storytelling and the voice over are great, it's really matter what graphics the game has, regardless I used the System Shock 2 Rebirth mods to make the graphics better. A horror is not horror because of the violence, the gore and endless brutality as many zombie lover believe these days, but the unexpected events and twists in the storyline, the noises and the atmospheric dark presentation is the key to scare someone to hell. System Shock 2 was one of the very-very few games, if not the only one that was capable to really scare me, and after 14 years, it is still capable to do that. This game is like a fine wine; it gets better with the ages. This is the reason why System Shock 2 is the best sci-fi horror game of all time.
