I completed the game recently and it could have been better if it was not so frustrating at certain points in the story.
Some examples that stood out among the others:
- finding and replacing the broken power relay 428 (the relays are not at all numbered and good luck finding the one that is broken in 4 labyrinths on the Maintenance level)
- cyberspace fights are annoying to me, with the green critters being very hard to hit and the screen being filled with particles it is hard to stay oriented
- the final boss fight is in cyberspace with 4 stages, no healing or saving in-between with an unskippable monologue sequence at the start
You know in your head, you picture 90's gfx, and you think man those days were awesome. But then you fire up original doom and it's soo grainy you can't even see? This game IS the rose colored glass image in your head. Perfect blend of retro and new.
GFX are great, gameplay is fun, and story, while only in drips and drabs is solid. I love this game. Just buy it already.
Gameplay needed a bit of an upgrade, for example many codes will be left on monitors that dont stand out or give you an idea they are needed for a code. They also put these codes on destroyable monitors so that if you break one you cannot progress.
There is no direction on what actions need to be taken to complete each level leading to hours and hours of searching empty levels for maybe that one bit of info thats missing.
They also like to put instant deaths in random spots just to kill you, for example i bought an item out of a vending machine and the game decided to give me a live grenade instead as a joke.
Enemies all have instant lock on and hit scan weapons, even weapons that are thrown are actually hitscan so you cannot dodge them.
Its just too bad they wasted such a good idea with 30 year old game ideas that use old school mechanics to keep you playing but people today dont want to waste hours looking at empty hallways with no directions on what do.
Why did someone decide you couldn't rebind the weapon keys ? Why can't I rebind the mouse wheel to a sane up for next weapon instead of the backasswards way it is now ? These are simple things that could easily be fixed but won't be...Refunded...
