Syberia

An easy to play point and click classic. Had a great time revisiting the original before the remaster releases later this year.

This is the game that made me fall in love - with adventure games! Syberia has gorgeous breath-taking graphics, an involving story, clever puzzles, professional voice talent, a moving soundtrack, and an interactive story line. You'll want to replay this many times in conjunction with Syberia 2, however each game stands on its own merit. Syberia is a good opportunity to introduce the world of adventure gaming to new players, especially girls and young women who aren't interested in the shooting and button-mashing type of games. It's not just for girls though, it's for anyone who likes a great story, fantastic animated graphics, great puzzles and a beautiful soundtrack. This game has it all!

You are Kate Walker, New York City lawyer on assignment to transfer the ownership of an automaton factory to a large toy corporation. Only this game wouldn't take more than five minutes if everything went well. You find out that a simple assignment, which was only supposed to last a day, is going to send you to a great many amazing, beautiful, enchanting places. The voice acting in this game is superb, but at times at odd with the scene. Kate Walker sometimes sounds like she's speaking to children, or perceives everyone as being slow. She tends to speak very nearly in that annoying, high pitched baby speak in some instances. It's really out of place. Also, there are phone conversations you have between your boss, mother, lady friend, and boyfriend (fiancee?), which seems there to try and great the illusion of a larger world outside what you're doing, but since you're in a wonder place to begin with, who cares about gossip in the real world? The story is original, though you'll catch similarities to other stories at superficial levels. The story is also a good one, that helps you immerse yourself in while you control Kate Walker on her journey. The music is also worth mentioning. It's very good, though sometimes can seem a bit repetitive, and the beginning scores sometimes make you think some action is going to take place, but it never does. This is a very fun game, and well worth your time.

Syberia is an amazing adventure, I'm not a fan of this genre, but liked it a lot. Puzzles are very logical and simple in a good way. Storytelling and characters are great, it was especially nice to see how main character changes through out the game. Backgrounds look decent even today (character models - not so much).

Contains vague story spoilers: Overall, a nice game. The atmosphere got considerably mysterious at end of first part, and the graphics and backgrounds actually felt amazing for given era. (possibly except human models). Yeah, the mechanics were somewhat clunky, and you often thought "Oh, so i could do that?" when you had to check walktrough after getting stuck. However, the whole second half of the game felt like sidequest gone wrong - "Oh, you are going somewhere? How about you find person X for me in place Y that just happens to be at the only place you can get from here?" It was nothing more than doing random favours that had nothing to do with theme of the story, and at this point i lost all respect for the story. Picking potatoes would progress the story just as much.
