Since its first demo was released in the Fall of 2012, The Pit has become an indie hit with its blend of Roguelike action and sci-fi depth! Players were challenged to survive 30 floors of The Pit using one of three characters – the Marine, the Engineer, and the Scout – then in The Pit: MindGames players were given two new characters – the Psion and the alien Tarka Ranger – and ten more floors to survive through, as well as a wealth of new items, recipes, weapons, and nasty creatures to fight!
To celebrate the success of the series, we’re releasing this Gold edition, which not only gives you the game, the expansion, and all the free content we added along the way, but we’re adding three new playable characters – The Hiver Warrior, the Liir Seeker, and the Morrigi Striker! Now you can test yourself against The Pit using all the major races from the Sword of the Stars universe!

I came to this game from such old greats as Angbang (and its variants), ToME, and Nethack. If you want something that's a bit prettier but still keeps the hardcore roguelike formula alive. This is a great choice. Metaprogression exists in the form of crafting recipes that persist through runs, and through what you learn along the way. After a few runs, you'll start figuring out which enemies are going to use psionics on you and be able to identify them offscreen from their sound. You'll develop strategies to keep your equipment intact as long as possible. You'll get a sense of how to cover a level in as few movements as possible to preserve your hunger bar.
It's a fantastic game if you're up for the challenge, though, for me at least, Galaxy won't update it properly. Still, my game works.
Note, there is very strong RNG in this game, but there are also systems to mitigate it. If you get a bunch of items that would be VERY strong on a different character, but useless on your own, there are chests every five floors that you can deposit those items into. You can then start a new game at THAT level, and be able to access all the contents of the chest. This enables you to build up a solid storehouse of food/ammo/weapons from runs where the RNG is being a bit too cruel so that you can have a leg up on a run of your choosing.
That being said, you're going to die a lot. This is a hard roguelike. Still, it's not impossible and there are people who can routinely beat it at the hardest difficulties. It's a matter of learning and strategy (and some RNG). Totally worth if you like the art style and the gameplay.
This game, more than anything else, has kept my passion for the SOTS-verse alive, and I wholehearthedly say, is one of the best tactical turn-based dungeon crawlers out there. A wonderful artstyle, a lovingly crafted game which has lore that ties into SOTS (grab that one if you like 4x games) perfectly and a deep and challenging gameplay, it's well worth it's price and renown. Although one run won't allow you to finish the game, the way you can help your characters out between runs is unique and forces you to do some meta-strategy out of this world. A must have!
GOG is not patching this game, the latest patch i know of is 1.6.2 on STEAM, which gives free OSMIUM-EDITION.
This platform here, however is missing this update for a month and the responds from the support are cheeky. I asked for the patch, naming patch and game - and they ignored the question completeley. The second time they asked me back which game and patch i mean. And the third time they asked which game and patch i am talking about. That´s so sad that i thought they are making fun of their customers.
Nice game for some brief in-and-out play sessions. Wide variety of items/monsters, but a little stingy with recipes and more advanced weapons. There's a problem that makes loading the DLC characters difficult, some have solved it, but I still haven't figued it out! :-)
