Still one of the best space 4x

It's strength lies in it's simplicity of colony management, battle system that still holds today and light roguelite research elements that ask you to adapt from your always tactics. Much better than it's sequel in every aspect.

I keep returning...

This is a game i keep returning to over and over. Yes, there are more modern games. There are games that do some things better. There's a sequel. Yet, I keep returning to this gem after trying out other alternatives. Why is the game great? The replayability is simply excellent. There are six different races that are actually DIFFERENT. They aren't just different skins on generic units; they actually have different game mechanics, different techs and different ships. Moreover, tech is random meaning some games you just won't get that very useful tech at the beginning meaning you have to alter your strategy to compensate. To top it off, there are alien menaces that can significantly alter each game. Anything that might put you off? There are some crashes, most of which revolve around having too many ships in a combat. Annoying, but you can avoid them. The galaxy map is 3D, not a top-down 2D map. It (literally) adds a new dimension - but also makes it harder to interpret the map. Not a negative in my opinion, but I can see some people feeling that it make things difficult.

4.5 stars for me

Bear in mind i've only played the single player game, But i really enjoy this space strategy. It isn't overly complicated and involved like some, you just colonise (in a simple way), build ships(fun to put together unique designs) and explore, which often leads to lots of ships blowing up, good or bad. It focuses on intestellar not planetside, and theres only a few resources, like people and income. I got soo bogged down in Stellaris because of the complexity, none of that here. The only twist is in how each "side" travels the universe, some are slow, some are fast but have limits on where they can travel. Its a great way of adding longevity. The game is turn based with real time battles, controls are easy enough, even easier than homeworld tbh. Anyway, thats my take on this game. I think it's very good.
