Welcome to Broken Britannia

"Before Arthur’s Golden Age, our realm was lost, shattered and decadent; kingdoms torn apart by blind selfishness. A broken Britannia, void of hope."

The lord of Mercia has been assassinated, your love kidnapped and home is no more. As Uther, the disgraced Knight Commander, you must lead your misfit band of companions throughout quests riddled with trials. Forge uneasy alliances to acquire the mythical Excalibur sword and defeat the sinister power-obsessed duke of Wessex.

Prove your worth as a tactician by exploring all five realms and dangerous locations, such as a frozen fortress hiding a dark secret, an ancient abbey turned into a hideous torture chamber and the mystical island of Avalon. Survive ambushes and rescue those in need by making use of each hero’s abilities to solve puzzles and vanquish your foes. It is up to you define the fate of Britannia… But at what cost?

Combat in Sword Legacy: Omen is always a challenge. As a strategist, you will need to plan your course of action with four heroes at a time. However, be ready to adapt and improvise because results always change based on the chosen abilities and chances of landing an attack.

Interesting but deeply flawed

This could have been a hidden gem of a game, and a 5-star review. It's got an interesting plot, good party management and skill selection, and the combat emphasis on moving opponents and using hazards is nice. But the game desperately needs some sort of attack-of-opportunity or zone-of-control attack. It's hard to use tank characters because enemies just run past them to hit support characters or tank flanks. And the length of some levels plus the scarcity of healing options, which might have added some grit and tension, instead means that one unlucky hit can almost guarantee your failure. It's worth a try on sale if you're a TRPG fan, and it's a bit more fun if you stumble through a few levels to understand the quirks of the game and then start over doing it right. But be prepared for some frustration.

OK, but not Great

Story ( 2 / 5 ) - practically nothing in common with Arthurian legends bar names of some of the characters - writing quality is passable - most of the dialogues are without voice acting ( which is OK in RPG wit hundreds / thousands pages of dialogues, but not so much for lower tens... ) Graphics ( 3 / 5 ) - camera is zoomed really close - art is great, but feel more like parody than grim and dark Game mechanics ( 2.5 / 5 ) - pretty standard turn based combat - low variability (3 bosses and few vars of standard enemies - AoE, Ranged, Melee, Rogue, Tank) - battles damage is random (it can go anywhere from 0 to instant kill) - difficulty scaling is not very good ( just more enemies, greater chance for negative result for player) - no exploration, just pixel hunting - zero replayability ( no decisions that changes story, there is a lot of games with similar combat system) Conclusion ( 2.5 / 5 ): Sword Legacy is not a bad game, but it is lacking polish. Some of the game mechanics (e.g. environmental interactions - barrels) feels half-done. Buy when on discount. There are more interesting games for similar price (Shadowrun, Banner Saga).

Short, low-budget, underpromising, bland

I would strictly avoid this. The art you see in the images is the only art you'll ever see in this game, and they plaster it as much as possible to try and cover the fact it's the only art they have. Animations and models are bad, voice lines are present only between levels, gameplay never really picks up, story is short and really bland, characters are as stereotypical as ever conceivable and world mechanics are barely significant. The "push people around" mechanic they flaunt does not work as intended in most cases and a lot of railings are placed to prevent you from having fun throwing people out of the map most of the time. AI is stupid as dirt and cannot figure out how to push or break any obstacle you can put up. They mostly walk on a straight line or stand still (if ranged), walk on fire most of the time and prioritize targets they cannot reach. They get some skills that look like the ones you get, except those look like they are not affected by the same rules. One such example is their rogue's "invisibility", which instead of letting them walk invisible it makes them appear behind you the next turn no matter how unreachable you are and stab you for free. Level design is nonsensical. On every level there is only one path to progress and a sequence of "ambushes". Ambushes are clearly announced by the presence of exploding barrels and they spawn enemies from thin air all around you, even where them appearing makes no sense. There is no way to have tactical placement before the fight. This is amateurish and disappointing. Try to avoid this game. Gets a 2 for actually working and not actually horrible.

Better than expected

Enjoyed this game more than I expected to, given the somewhat lukewarm reviews on here. It is a Tactical RPG and has the usual 'take 4 of 8 party members on missions involving turn-based combat on a grid, level and buy gear between missions' gameplay that you'll recognise from Banner Saga, Fell Seal, Regalia, Shadowrun, etc.) Bottom line: if you enjoyed any of those games, you'll enjoy this too. Story-wise, we get a kind of dark fantasy retelling of the Arthurian saga and while the story is nothing spectacular and a fairly simple 'unite the kingdom & save the girl from the big bad' kind of setup , it is well-told for the most part (with some strange dialog choices here and there however) and will keep you engaged to the end. The gameplay is stronger than the story with the tactical experience actually pretty rich - the various party members you recruit have a range of unique abilities and upgrades that make them play quite differently to one another, and that make for different strategies depending on who you take on missions. Terrain provides another layer of tactical complexity with exploding barrels that impose various debuffs, ledges you can push enemies off and mechanics that reward attacking from behind and on high ground. The only let-down is fairly poor AI scripting: enemies with ranged attacks just stand and wait for you to come to them and melee units often use their action points to chase weak units rather than making attacks. Still, enemies hit hard and your own dudes are squishy and healing is scarce, so the game stays difficult enough to keep you engaged, especially in boss battles. The game is very linear and takes maybe 12-15 hours to beat at a fairly leisurely pace, and there's not much replay value. Still, if it is on special and you've played and enjoyed the other titles mentioned above, it is probably worth your while.

Not a bad little game.

I was not expecting a lot from this game, but it was a pleasant surprise. It doesn't excel at anything and it's not terrible at anything. I thought the combat was good and kept me more interested than the story. The story is not bad, just didn't hold my attention so much. It's a take on the Arthurian story. It's not a long game and a good game to play between longer games. It's not an epic story, but a short game that will entertain. I was fortunate not to experience any bugs. Others have, I did not. Perhaps these bugs have been addressed.
