SWAT 3: Tactical Game of the Year Edition

Forget all of the flashy modern titles out there--if one wants to experience close quarters, tactical, DYNAMIC (that means that you're NOT glued to one pre-designed path <insert any lame Call of Duty or Medal of Honor title here>) and nail-biting combat, then THIS title is for you. Its AI is superb. You literally cannot ever have the same experience twice. Even when playing MP maps against the bots, they will OWN you. Weapon ballistics are realistically modeled: that means rounds can pass through materials and bodies (watch out for innocent civilians and/or arrested criminals and terrorists as rounds can pass through the bad guys and right into them!). SWAT 4 was graphically superior, but the AI was much weaker than what's featured here. SWAT 3's AI is topnotch, and it's inexcusable that more modern titles have AI that's far below what was accomplished here. The only drawback to me is the lack of true iron sights. I wish that the .exe could be cracked and this one feature made plausible. But still...this game rules. The command system takes a bit of getting used to. Perhaps two hours of committed playtime, but is WELL worth it. This is a demanding game on the brain, which makes it all the more rewarding to play. If you don't have it yet, get it NOW. Thanks GOG for saving a great title that deserves to be played!

A great game, unfortunately, this GOG release does not work on Windows 8 64-bit. You will need to install 3rd party video drivers to get the game to launch, then you will be hit with unplayable framerates in game. GOG should consider mentioning this on the store page for the game... :-(

By owning both the original first release of the game, and the later Elite edition; nostalgia have made it pretty clear on how hard it can be to have this game run on WinX. This version did however start up smoothly on my first try, but it did have a problem regarding a very low frame rate. This is pretty easily fixed, but those who aren't too familiar with modifying games; might be deterred from this title. So about the game: SWAT 3 is an incredibly detailed first person tactical shooter, where one really feel like one get to step into the combat boots of a seasoned element leader in the Special Weapons And Tactics unit. Even though the graphical fidelity haven't kept all its appeal since it's release 18 years ago, it still manages to keep an authentic feel. With well scripted and acted mission briefings, complete with the occasional witness observation, timeline up to the arrival of your team, choice of starting tactics and entry point and squad set-up. The game also don't encourage killing, and it's made clear through various major and minor elements. Examples being through the fully voiced briefings, the access to non-lethal armaments or the command menu where the only line given a quick button is the order to comply. In other words, have the suspect, hostage or civilian drop any weapons and reach for the sky. This command is also context sensetive, meaning you won't be screaming at any crying children. If you buy this game, I want you to experience what happens for the first time youreself. The game also have slight variations on each mission, heightening the replayability factor. A civilian might be hiding scared in the bathroom in one playthrough; while picking up a gun and becoming a suspect in the next. Its these things and so many more that make me fully recommend this game. I own the original CD of Swat 3 CQB, and it doesn't work with Windows 7 Pro x64. So I purchased the GOG version, it doesn't work either. I went back and forth for nearly a month with GOG in e-mails, trying to get it to work. All of the fixes on the internet, everything GOG told me to do, did not make the GOG version of Swat 3 work properly. It's a great game, but it will not work with Windows 7 x64.

You'll get a DDERR_GENERIC every time you launch the game. I followed some guides online to get it to launch properly, but then the game is unplayable due to horribly low framerate.
