Surviving Mars

Note, I pre-ordered and I am still playing the original version, on Linux ... looks like there's already an updated (patched?) version, which I'm downloading now, and will try out, shortly. Very good game. Fun, addictive time-suck. For me, it's halfway between The Sims and SimCity. Enough colonists that it feels like a city planner, but not so many that you cannot get wrapped up in the lives of individual colonists ... with the added twist that "city planning" includes managing oxygen supply, preparing for meteor strikes, etc. My main gripe with the game is that it is (was?) a bit buggy. Nothing critical, nothing that makes the game unplayable, but minor annoyances ... 1) some in-game text is intermittently scrambled and unreadable ... 2) Occasional CTDs (crash to desktop) ... 3) Some saves cannot be loaded from game starting menu (work-around: Start an earlier save-game, then while in that game, switch to the save-game you actually want) ... 4) Colonists occasionally wander off into the wilderness and die, for no good reason. Note that some or all of the above issues could already be resolved.

Great game, waiting for full mod support on Linux! It might be possible to use them under Linux, but there is no mod loader etc like on windows by now. Longer review follows later.

I think this game is great, but I had troubles launching it at first. When I first downloaded it I would launch see the icon and then nothing would happen this seems to be and issue with a tool not being downloaded. This tool is called "lib32-libcurl-gnutls." You can find this within the package manager or just by using pacman. If this helps anyone good luck I hope it works for you too. Linux is better then windows the end.

The survival aspect doesn't really show itself until you start running low on resources. When you start scrambling for metal to fix moxies after a storm is when you survive. The expansions also expand the long term play concept as well as the immersion. It's a fun little game that runs well on Manjaro Linux. :)

This is a really well-designed fun game that sucks you in, and gives you excellent replay value. I loved this game deeply and dearly, and I'd be hard pressed to mention another base builder with the same fun factor, it may be the best in its type to date. I love the base builder genre, and this one was innovative in a number of ways. I think its definitely worth it for anyone who likes base builders at all, and this would be an excellent first base-builder for someone who doesn't think they like the genre
