Take the helm of your customised steamship and set sail for the unknown! Sunless Sea is a 2D game of discovery, survival and loneliness set in the award-winning Victorian Gothic universe of Fallen London. Will you succumb to madness and cannibalism on the black waters? Or return home triumphant with a hold full of precious loot?
Events can turn out differently every game - sometimes, even if you make the same choices. Will you lose your sweetheart to a curse? Redeem, betray or consume the Genial Magician? Sell your soul to the Wistful Deviless or spurn her advances? Is the Dawn Machine your salvation, or your doom?
You are the captain. It’s your call.
Light and dark. Stray too far from the gas-lamps of civilisation and your crew will grow fearful and eventually lose their sanity. But there is treasure out there in the darkness…
Upgrade your steamship with powerful engines, flensing cannons, and pneumatic torpedo guns. Or just buy a bigger, better ship.
Hire unique officers like the Haunted Doctor and the Irrepressible Cannoneer. Each has a story to tell, if you can draw it out of them.
Choose from a menagerie of ship’s mascots: the Comatose Ferret, the Wretched Mog, the Elegiac Cockatoo, and more!
Trade silk and souls, mushroom wine, and hallucinogenic honey.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
okay it hangs then it crashes and when it finally works, the whole UI disappears and i can't do a thing. not sure if the unity engine is plain bad for integrated graphics or if this game is just a really bad (forever in) beta game? I rather play the silly "causal" browser game.
If you are an avid reader and have a lot of imagination this one is for you.Your kaptain will often die on high seas if you do not make the right decisions. The setting is in the Fallen London tales
Were this a professional review, I probably wouldn't give five stars. I consider these reviews subjective, however, not objective, and can only describe my own experiences here. A review based on how I feel folks generally would respond to the game would probably have a number of stars based on a clearly defined scale elsewhere on the site.
The only reason I say "your mileage may vary" is because my experience of this game has, apparently, been vastly more pleasant than that of others. So far, I am the only person I know who is unambiguously and simply very, very fond of Sunless Sea.
I would compare the game to FTL or ZAngband, but neither of these has any safety nets for failure that I've encountered, which makes a considerable difference in enjoyment.
Pros:
I've been playing it nonstop for a week plus, and it's proven stable. I haven't encountered any errors to my knowledge.
The lore seems internally consistent.
It is possible to make progress, and there is a joy to seeing substantial differences as one captain gives way to the next. For me, at least. It could all come crashing down, but the game does reward early conservative playstyles, despite a general sense of time pressure.
Cons:
I've actually lost some sleep playing this game into long hours. There's some skinner box mechanics which can be addictive.
It's slow going, and it can all crash down on you if a combination of bad luck and poor planning result in vast losses.
I've played this game about 6 or 7 hours, so I can not give an indepth review of things. But I can say that this game is fun and entertaining and makes me not want to stop playing. You can step in and play right away, with little knowledge of what you are doing, and it is fun. After an hour, I got the idea of things and didn't have to suffer through some tutorial to do so (thanks RPG's for making me hate tutorials). I'm sure the person that said unlike other Roguelikes that you spend a small amount of time on then die compared to this time sucker that you put many many hours into and then die is probably right and I'm sure that is frustrating... but the thing is, those hours are FUN hours. And that is my review. The game is fun to play so while I am sure it will show its flaws at some point, right now I'm having to much fun to care much about them. -- I'll try to update this review at a later time.
In a modern age of 'whoa, I need more Battle Royale Games-as-Services by Subscriptions for 19.99/month!' this masterpiece deserves so much more respect.
Great stylish visuals.
Robust gameplay which doesn't mess with narrative.
And, oh, damn, the narrative is AWESOME!
Full of Bioshock Infinite level surprises, suspense, each playthrough is a dramatic story which is only that much predictable.
Especially if one won't go googling for spoilers.
Besides, multiple endings.
With only one true ending.
(aside from drowning, being eaten, being shot in the back or kicking the bucket after irritating the Powers... there are Powers, you know... which is also a true ending although not the winning one)
One of few narrative-heavy games which you can not only WIN or LOSE but also finish it with a draw, DRAW, dammit!
(in fact, can't recall any other games with such feature)
Of course, if you don't like to read - kindly skip this game. You'll be disappointed.
Otherwise... welcome... my... DeLiCiOuS... FRIEND!!!
