Cool concept, but "meh-ish" execution

The idea and concept of Styx and the games world itself is actually very interesting and appears to be well thoght out. However this only rises my disappointment, since the devs absolutely butchered this good concept with bad-to-mediocre game mechanics which suffer from clunky implementations and common bugs. I got to a point where i basically had no motivation to play this game any further. In comparison to other games based around stealth (Dishonored, AC, etc.), Styx: Master of Shadows absolutely tanks in several categories: Combat: The games approach on combat is an absolute disaster. It is poorly implemented and solely consists of Quicktime-Events, which mostly fail because of bugs. I get that this game revolves around stealth, but thats not an excuse to make the combat an absolute mechanical nightmare, which essentially makes getting spotted a death-sentence. Even fleeing from fights isn't possible! Levels/maps: The levels are beautifully designed, but get repetetive pretty quickly. There's also alot of recycling during the later stages of the game. Parkour/Movement: The controls and movement can be quite clunky and buggy. Sometimes Styx climbs up ledges without the player actually pressing a button, sometimes he somehow doesn't grab a ledge which results in his death and the game does a poor job at explaining the mechanics. For example Styx wont climb ledges automatically if you press spacebar a little bit longer. Also Styx will automaticly hold onto ledges if you walk off of them while pressing shift. All mechanics that are not explained well enough by the game. Stealth: The stealth mechanic seems to be working just fine mostly. Sometimes dark areas don't trigger Styxs tattoo's, while some bright areas sometimes do. Also sometimes enemies seem to have eagle eyes. Conclusion: Great concept, but frustrating to play due to serious gameplay-issues.

Enjoyable, but quite flawed

The target audience of the game were most likely the stealth game lovers and those who loved the world of Orcs and Men (especially those like me who mainly used Styx for solving problems and only called Arkail to clean up the rest). I feel like those two goals were contradictory. The first part of the game is really boring. Due to the skill point system you lack a lot of options, and the story unfolds very slowly, and adds very little to the world. No wonder many players quits the game in less than 6 hours. The second part of the game challenged me quite so, but If you tend to save-scum you won't have problems even without stealth game expertise. The story started to become incredible as a prequel to OOAM, and many things happened right before my eyes which were only stories and legends in the first game. The problem is that levels become twice as long, and the game reused the early levels: the only changes were that they were repopulated with tougher enemies and you needed to go the opposite way. It was kinda nice because those maps provided more opportunity this way and it was a huge benefit to know its quirks, but for the love of god, certain maps appeared 3 times, and for the first playthrough you most likely replay levels since you can't get the speedrun /no kill /all token targets at the sane tine. 6 times on the same map is a little too much. Few minor things: The finale was rubbish gameplay-wise. You can't really do boss battles in a stealth game like this. There are some really annoying features in the game. Like if you want to jump down between two ledges you simply cant. The character will grab one of them and automatically climbs up. The tutorial level does a good job introducing you to most of the mechanics without being boring, but forgets one thing: you and your clones can actually roar/whistle to attract guards. Would be very useful if I know it sooner. 10 of the achievements are not working on the GoG version. If thats important buy elsewhere.

Not a great Stealth title

The bane of many a stealth game, is bizzare stealth detection. I stealth kill a guard, but the one on the far side of the room AND facing away sees me and runs right at me. Another time I stealth kill and immediately hide under a desk *buzzer* NOPE guard knows exactly where I am and kills me. Since Styx isn't great at melee, the whole point is to be sneaky. Kinda hard to BE sneaky if guards have super-heearing and x-ray vision. I will say the game did look fairly good, though the opening cut scene was very grainy like a 2000ish game would be. Refunded.

Better than expected!

I was expecting a short, janky stealth platformer, but it was actually much more polished and fun game! The one star down is just for a few repeated maps, and also for the game length - if it was an hour or two shorter it would feel much better. However I was never forcing myself to finish this. Well... off to Shards of darkness!
