For the first time ever Stronghold: Warlords allows you to recruit, upgrade and command AI lords across the battlefield in the form of in-game ‘Warlords’. Each warlord under your command boosts your strategic prowess with unique perks, characteristics and upgradeable abilities. Put them to work for your industry, fortifying borders, forging weapons or team up for a pincer attack! Each campaign mission, skirmish game and multiplayer battle means a fresh set of warlords to command and a completely new way to play Stronghold.


The next chapter in Firefly Studios' real-time strategy series, Stronghold: Warlords is the first game to recreate the castle economies of East Asia. In Warlords players take command of Mongol hordes, imperial warriors and samurai clansmen as they lay siege to Japanese castles and fortified Chinese cities. Besiege historical warlords using new gunpowder-fuelled siege weapons and classic units across 31 campaign missions, multiplayer, skirmish and free build modes.

Stronghold Warlords is a decent strategy game. While the city-building and sieging truly let the game shine, the slow and sluggish pace between these can truly drag it down. The new diplomacy and warlords system adds something to the series and makes for a welcome change, but it's impossible not to think of this as a game that feels and plays like a strategy game from 20 years ago, for better and for worse.

Cool and fun game

NOTE: I played and still play all Strongholds. First two are my favorite. This is not a classical Stronghold game. It does not have that depth. BUT, this is a really fun game, and I really enjoy it. There are few things that they need to fix: bugs, especially those of Warlords, more maps, bigger maps, environment looks dull, no moat, cannot control manually the gatehouse... once AI goes defensive, it stays defensive. It is fun for a while, then it is defence only. But still, battles are cool. Sieges are good. There is some fun in building a castle. The finally got the engine right (still, need to work on houses and lighthning). I would say 4.5, but there is no 4.5, so it is 5 then.

Asian theme makes Stronghold so good

This game has a sweet Asian theme to everything with new buildings, units and leaders from medieval Asia. They added in mini-warlords that have a keep you can capture and they give you a nice bonus and support army you can call for support when you are launching your assaults. The Asian aspect of this game is very underrated. There are a lot of neat Japanese red district buildings so you can build your own little medieval Roppongi with the street and entertainment buildings all looking very Edo era style. The DLCs add in fun new warlords with new campaigns. The content in this game is very satisfying similar to Stronghold Crusader 2 which adds in a lot of new trails for each new warlord. Some of the missions are very hard which is usual for these games while in some of the easier earlier missions you can load up with troops and siege weapons and smash the badguys when you are ready. You should be able to win the battles but some take multiple replays to win. The new units are awesome both the warriors and rockets. Castles are less robust in this game so don't expect a few towers and wall covered in archers to hold off an enemy army. A few rocket salvos will turn it to rubble so make sure you always have a force ready to sally forth and fight in the field.
