Twenty-two years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the world has become embroiled in a series of conflicts centered around an ever-dwindling resource: oil. Mankind’s hopes for world peace lie battered and broken. Take command of Stern’s Wildcats, an elite squadron of mercs trying to fly straight in a world of deceit and violence. Engage rival merc squadrons, third world dictators, and the armies of the dreaded IRS. In a world gone mad, there’s plenty of room to fly, all that’s required is the cash.
Strike Commander puts you in the best place to witness fast-paced dogfighting action: the pilot’s seat. Fly high as you take on over 60 missions, each more challenging than the last in your top-of the-line F16 squadron piloted by the best crew in the business (operational success rate of 86%). Strike Commander is a classic flight combat sim where a pilot is only as good as his, or her, last flight. Fly to survive and survive to fly, in this modern-day action-oriented jet fighter combat simulation!
Strike Commander includes the original game, Strike Commander: Tactical Operations, and the expanded Speech Pack.
Features Gauntlet mode: wave after wave of enemies.See how long you can survive!
A powerful and gripping story set in an alternative future that didn't turn out quite as expected.
This is one of Origin's finest games from the 90's.
Step into the cockpit of a top of the line F16 and fly along the mercenary flight squadron Wildcats as they undertake various contracts, including the protection of food and supplies to starving civilians in a civil war torn Africa and more.
Inbetween the missions, you will be able to talk to the crew about the current situation, you can also later in the game buy new missiles for the planes.
The game is best played with a joystick, which is what a lot of gamers used back in the 80's and 90's for flight games, as it can be quite tricky getting used to the controls.
But once you get the hang of it, you will be flying like a true ace and shoot down enemy planes from the sky like it's nothing.
Nothing from the years 1993-2010 can compare to this game, awesome manual, great choices, gripping fights. Now if someone would do such a game with current graphics. Don't misunderstand me, with games as IL2, Warthunder and World of Planes we have new games with very good dogfighting but all of those newer games are missing the cool story and the managing of ressources.
I remember picking this one up at a digital media store. I never head of 'Strike Commander' before, but the F-16 on the front of package looked awesome. Back in that day a 468DX was barely enough to run the game, but I spend hours on end playing this. It has a gripping story, characters that I started caring about and some sort of RPG elements in making choices on who to bring to your mission and the story followed suit. The sounds and camera's were excellent and dogfighting was a lot of fun.
They certainly don't make games like this anymore.. Strike Commander is an absolute masterpiece
I first played this title when it was brand new as part of a bundle of PC games that my dad got when he got the family a new PC for Christmas. This was the title I kept coming back to. Not because it was easy to play, far from it, but because it was awesome.
Chris Roberts produced this shortly after he made Wing Commander 2. Graphically it was innovative using texture mapping on top of polygon models. Sure, today it's an obvious relic but it holds up. Recommend you download and peruse the manual and have the reference card on hand when playing. The difficulty can be tweaked to one's liking as well. You can make it punishingly hard with simulated G-forces blinding your view as well as sun glare.
Your Vulcan cannon will likely be your most used weapon as the missile loadout is realistic with only a few available at a time. You can give yourself a break with unlimited gun ammo if you just want to enjoy yourself, but if you want a challenge you'll still have one. Damage to your craft is punishing. You may find yourself only able to steer by rudder and trying to splash a MIG rushing towards you with only your guns as your ailerons.
The story isn’t bad either. Set (at the time) in the near future of 2011, you lead a group of F-16 equipped mercenaries in a world full of open warfare. I’m guessing the near exclusive use of the F-16 was a creative restriction, though you fight over two dozen kinds of aircraft, and near the end game (spoilers?) you steal a prototype (at the time) YF-22 and use that in the climax of the main game, and continue to use its sequel mission that comes with this edition, Tactical Operations.
All-in-all its great fun if you enjoy older games and especially flight simulators.
I remember playing this back in 1995 on my PC. What a fantastic game, awesome story and great storytelling. The missions were always tense but loads of fun. Would highly recommend this for anybody who was into military flight sims from the 90's!
