I always heard about how Strife was an RPG made in the DOOM engine and was quite curious to test it out. I am not disapointed, but it is just DOOM with some light RPG mechanics and free exploration. If you love DOOM you can't go wrong with this one, but don't expect any deep mechanics. Bonus points for creating the technique of stitching up multiple levels together to create the illusion of a seamless world, made famous by Half-life.
Four outta five. I've played the GOG release of Strife on both Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17.3. Plays great on both.
PROS: + Pretty big open world, which opens up even more with story progression. + RPG-like upgrades and branching story paths. + Fully interactive NPCs. + Side quests. Pretty good story, with plenty of plot twists. + Very modest hardware requirements. + Win/Mac/Linux versions included. + Veteran Edition features graphics enhancements and controller support. + Includes original DOS version of Strife, with the .wad files being compatible with ZDoom and GZDoom. + A steal at only $10.
CONS: None that I can think of.
Strife is and old-school shooter where the levels are held together with RPG glue. The shooting is the main focus of the game, and it definitely has an old-school flavor. Move fast, circle strafe, and except some hordes at later levels. The weapons are all varied without being gimicky, fun to use, and there was never a point where an older weapon became useless. If you enjoy old dos shooters, you'll enjoy that aspect of the game. The RPG side of things isn't as deep as system shock or deus ex, but the ability to buy weapons, ammo, and armor, as well as improve your health and accuracy are a fun edition. The plot is nothing to write home about and gets a little campy at times; think 90's R-rated sci-fi flick and you're in the wheelhouse. Still, the way it's laid out over a few hubs and mission givers makes it feel like the plot is moving forward more than in a traditional level-to-level shooter. I felt like I was actually taking part in the story, as opposed to mowing down waves of enemies before moving on, never to see that area again. The graphics feature a nice color palate, though it's easy to see some of the larger enemies and think they are just a bit beyond the capabilities of the doom engine. Some of the animations are also a little choppy, but thankfully for the most part I was too busy running and gunning to care. The comic-style art in some of the dialogue screens is also good. The music is catchy, and almost all of the dialogue is voice acted. The sounds are all satisfying, with loud weapons and menacing robotic servos. Overall, I had a lot of fun in my time playing strife, and look forward to doing so again.
tl;dr: If you like old school shooters or are new to the genre and looking for a good new game, strife is a good place to star.
