Description
Streets of Rogue is a rogue-lite about player choice, freedom, and anarchic fun. The game takes inspiration from fast-paced top-down rogue-lites like Binding of Isaac and Nuclear Throne, and adds free-form, experimentation-driven, emergent gameplay elements of RPGs like Deus Ex.

Rather than taking place in a dungeon, the game is set in a functioning, procedurally generated city, where complex AI informs denizens from all walks of life, who are just trying to get by in their daily activities.

In order to progress, the player will need to accomplish specific mission goals in any way they see fit through use of their special character traits, items, and the environment.

  • Will you play as a soldier who shoots first and asks questions later?
  • A stealthy doctor who uses chloroform and tranquilizer darts to silently take down the opposition?
  • A genial bartender who can talk his way past the most intimidating of guards?
  • Or how about a hyper-intelligent gorilla, rescuing other caged gorillas to form a small mobilized gorilla army?

The Mighty Feature-List

  • Play the game YOUR way! Don’t want to kill anybody? That’s cool! Want to hack computers? Got ya covered!
  • Random world generation and TOTALLY EXTREME gameplay variety means you can play for 600 hours and not get bored! Seriously though, go outside!!!
  • Super-advanced artificial intelligence that won’t put up with your crap! Outsmart these virtual humans and feel superior to your computer!
  • Play as over 20 (and growing!) wildly different types of characters! Bartender, scientist, hacker, gorilla — hey, your job is probably in there too!
  • Stupidly huge variety of items! Shrink rays, hypnotizing devices, boomboxes, bear traps, food processors.. Oh, and guns too.
  • 4-Player online and local cooperative modes lets you brutalize goons AND loneliness!
  • Lead a gang, free slaves, drink beer, gib ghosts, become a vampire, shrink people and stomp on them. The most insanely varied game ever made.

Amazing Random Scenarios

Streets of Rogue is a fun and challenging top down action stealth game with some crazy procedurally generated levels. Pick from a variety of classes with strengths and special abilities, then work your way through the map completing missions. Try not to shoot the wrong person, don't get caught by the police, hide under a box, eat cheeseburgers, slay vampires, employ help, flip the switches, aqcuire a tooth, turn invisible, take out mobsters, get a mission from the barkeep, fight robots, avoid slime, on and on and on. Every run is completely unpredictable and there is always something new. This game will never get old! Also, GOG claims you can't play multiplayer in Linux, but you CAN! You can host a LAN game by going to "Online" then LAN and your friends can connect over your network with your IP address. The game even saves your progress. I can't bost enough about Streets of Rogue! There is even a demo out there to see how it runs and get used to the twin-stick controls. Check it out, then buy it!

Just good nonsensical fun

I did one run where I played a hacker that could hack fridges so the sprouted legs and burst through walls to give me a new entrance. Next run I was a zombie starting a plague. The NEXT I was a dubious doctor sneaking up and knocking people out cold with chloroform. This game gave me all those opportunities. And I love it for that

Fantastic, once you give it a chance.

I bought SoR on Steam when it first came out, played it for about 20 minutes and then refunded it. It just didn't click for me even though I'm a huge fan of both rogue-likes and pixel art games. I bought it again on GOG a year or two ago with the intent to revisit it at some point, but never got around to it. A couple weeks ago I finished a few games in my backlog and was looking for the next one to tackle and saw SoR in the list. This time around I gave it more than 20 minutes and I also gave myself permission to look through the wiki for beginner tips. Sixty-five hours or so later I will gladly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of rogue-likes. While it doesn't have the level of interaction and "TDTTOE" that Nethack has, there is a surprisingly large number of systems interacting together to create some incredibly fun emergent gameplay. ESPECIALLY if you use mutators, which I highly recommend doing once you've played through it a bit. I have earned 100% of the achievements which is uncommon for me as I'm not an achievement chaser. The dev's sense of humor jives completely with my own, so this game was hilarious for me. The huge variety of characters to play, along with the ability to create your own custom characters means there's a lot of replay here. There are a ton of things to unlock (none of which require you to spend real life $$) and the soundtrack is absolutely awesome (this is the first game I've ever bought the soundtrack for). Every situation in the game can be approached differently ranging from full on destroy everything that moves to talking your way/bribing your way through, to hacking computers and robots and everything in between. If you like rogue-like games that remind you of late 80's/early 90's style action/rpg/shooters, along with games like Dungeons of Dredmor, Nethack, etc., you should give this game a chance. If you struggle with the beginning, don't be afraid to read the wiki for some tips and tricks.

Great game

One of those games where even though you suck at it you still love it. I don't mind that I keep getting killed around level 6. Because I love playing it over and over. Very addictive, so if you are one of those people, don't get it (but really, get it).

Stealth, humor, murder, and much more!😃

I have mostly played single player, but this would also be great with some friends on the couch. I use a dual stick gamepad. I think it is pretty fun. Pumping music. Many ways to interact with the world, with entertaining results.. It's nice to be able to play as so many different characters. Most of them have some special ability that seems simple, but has complicated effects in the wacky, random situations.
