Music by the fan-favourite Steam Powered Giraffe!
The fate of botkind rests in your hands—are you ready to lead your crew through treacherous waters?
It boggles the mind how they managed to get rid of the stuff that got on my nerves in the first part (limited inventory space nixed, no tears shed there) and expanded on what, to me, made the first part great. The heists feel much smoother here, but all mechanics from part one are intact. The added overworld naval battles won't cause hand cramps or twitchy trigger fingers, it's a surprisingly relaxed affair even with keyboard and mouse. Almost all of the upgrade systems can be understood immediately. They have much more of a story this time, but of course they never bury you with walls of text. I also think the character design is much improved. For the first time, I really like the in-game music in a Steamworld game. Besides, this is a really beautiful game to boot (with a 4k option should your screen be up to it). I think it boils down to "if you liked Heist 1, you'll love Heist 2". And to be honest, I loved Heist 1 already.
To spare you the nonsens and padding :
- Enjoyable combat with customisable difficulty,
- Good artstyle and music,
- Lots of content,
- Plenty of collectiable and replay value.
The negatives :
- No minimap where to go ( as a ship ),
- Tedius game mechanics ( Everytime your crew goes on a mission, player has to go back to BAR to rest... some backtracking etc. )
- Ship controls are a bit janky,
- Annoying mumbled robotic voices that can be switched off in the menu,
- Grindy ( especially if you want to unlock everything, be prepared to Grind character jobs, resources, bonus missions, hats, replay missions etc. ) This is a bit tedious in my opinion.
- Balancing issues and difficulty spikes. Some "Job's" are clearly better than others. You can easily win some missions with just the brawlers... but if you had taken only snipers... you will slowly start loosing as they have to reload the gun after each shot ( loosing movement action in the process ). I had the same problem with the prequel.
Overall enjoyable game but in small burst of time.
It's a solid game, if you like the first, most likely you'd like this. Combat is bassically the same with new people, skills and weapons.
The story and lore works pretty well with the saga, and some light comedy is still present. Great music too, hoping for the soundtrack here.
The biggest novelty of the game is being able to explore the map and have some real-time fights. It is pretty nice and there's some hidden things to find, which encourages exploration, however there are really not many things to find, and in the middle-end game the place gets too big to go around.
I'm kinda dissapointed on the mc not being able to fight formost of the game, and the payoff later in the game does not feel that great.
The game is also unnecessary grindy, literally just before the end mission you get a boost to EXP, that comes too late, it should be boosted sooner.
Still, despite some flaws, the overall experience is great, I could not avoid finishing the game in just a few days despite being an almost 30 hour run.
Pros:
- pretty graphics
- great ost (Steam Powered Giraffe did amazing work as always)
- naval combat and exploration is really fun
- addicting gameplay (I lost count how many times I said: "just one more turn")
Cons:
- way too grindy (pacing was better in the first game)
This is what I needed, this is what I was waiting for, just another great Steamworld game from this developer. Nice calm atmosphere, pleasant graphics and music, no visible bugs so far.
