When mind and machine become one – what will remain of humanity?

Berlin, 2048 – The world is on the brink. Lack of resources, illnesses caused by polluted air and water, crime on the rise, war. Governments and companies promise remedies through technological progress. Drones and humanoid robots replace humans in the public sector, everything is interconnected, surveillance has become omnipresent.

Richard Nolan is one of the few journalists openly criticizing this development. When he wakes up in hospital after an explosion and finds that his wife and son have mysteriously vanished, Richard realizes: he and his family have become more than just bystanders in a storm of rivaling ideas pertaining humankind’s salvation between dystopian reality and digital utopia. Instead, they find themselves right at the center of it.

This domestic drama evolves into a thriller about a worldwide conspiracy, which at its core aims to determine the fate of humanity: Could a perfect digital utopia be the answer? A virtual paradise not affected by material needs and quarrels? Could a super-AI be our savior – or would it simply declare us as dispensable since it could not be taught the value of philanthropy?

What will the world look like after this storm, what will remain of humanity?

  • Experience an alarmingly realistic vision of the near future
  • Dive into a multi-layered Sci-Fi thriller, where dystopian reality and digital utopia are intertwined
  • Unravel a global conspiracy in a society of ubiquitous digitalism, surveillance and transhumanism
  • Explore a world with a rich and unique visual style, combining realistic environments with low-poly characters
  • Take on the role of journalist Richard Nolan, as well as five additional playable characters
  • Use dexterity, deductional skill and research to reconstruct Richard's past

Somewhat flawed masterpiece!

Very deep, slow, mature, and underrated! Deals with inequality/poverty, war/terror, super-AI, robotic future, VR, relationship problems, and so on. There's no humour in this game, it's all pretty dark. A fantasticly crafted vision of the future, very detailed, and much larger and more polished than I had expected. Sounds and music really help to immerse you into the story! I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of choices that impact the story, but I don't know for sure. You can't play this in a hurry, or if you expect action, or collecting stars/coins or anything like that. This is a very slow and detailed game, you need to be in the mood for some sci-fi relaxing and just sink into the world - something that is pretty easy since it's all so beautiful and well made. There are a couple of puzzles that are pretty annoying though...really annoying actually. Most puzzles are very easy, but still a bit fun/relaxing, but the annoying ones all have to do with labyrinths sort of, and they are not fun at all. Just watch a walkthrough if you get stuck though, no big deal. Also I didn't like the story much towards the last third or so, it just got a bit too much for my taste, pretty complex and just overdone - I liked the first part best, when everything was bilding up and was more of a mystery. If the game crashes towards the end, which it did for me and quite a few others, what seems to help is setting everything to lowest and try again! That old bug apparently ain't fixed yet, cause I got it 2022 with newest game version, newest drivers and all Windows updates etc! Anyway, really good game, specially at 90% sale which is what I got it for!

Successful

I was completely amazed by State of Mind's plot and characters. Some plot twists were really surprising. And I would definitely enjoy playing more games by these developers. It certainly is more successful in a conceptual level than in its execution, but all its shortcomings could be solved with a bigger budget. It is a mature, thought-provoking game that defied my expectations. Well written, well designed, with some shortcomings as a game, but really successful when it comes to storytelling. It is a yes from me.

Into the abyss

It's hard to describe this game without spoiling too much of the story. Think Neuromancer, Bladerunner and Ghost in the Shell, mixed with Daedalics usual high-class imagination and ideas, give it a good stir and you get this game (maybe). Richard storx about his lost memories is only the beginning, there's much much more to this than it appears at first. And there are many things seemingly irrelevant and trivial which later on become important. Unlike your typical adventure there are very little items and no real item-hunting, instead the story is driven by dialogs and the interactions between characters. As there are several playable characters (you switch as the story moves on) and even though there is no instance where you play the same scene from two different perspectives, some events are seen through different persons eyes. Keeping with the dystopian cyberpunk theme, the overall atmosphere and setting of the game world is mostly dark and somewhat depressing at times. In contrast, there are places and locations which are exceeedingly bright and colorful just to make a point. The voice actors (for the german version) are good as usual, only in a few places I would have preferred different ones. Overall, the game is less of a typical adventure but more of an interactive story (in keeping with Daedalics history) which you play through and experience. But don't expect to be finished in a few hours, this game is quite long! So, if you want to experience this different and yet still somewhat reminiscent world I can highly recommend this game.

Dammit why there's not any more of this?

I expected a different kind of story. The trailer really misguides you about what the game would be. Still, the tradoff is fine by me as this story is enticing. I like the wai it is served. We're given clues and are able to inspect those clues at our leisure. One thread of evbents leads to another and everything gets tangled into a huge knot of mess. And it is your job to untangle it. What I don't like in this story is that it explores too many themes thus not concentrating on one and furthering it to completion. Storytelling doesn't feel continuous at times and characters spit their lines at each other not concerned with overall mood. It happends a lot towards the end. The other gripe i have is purely technical. I honectly don't like the way camera is set (especially when controlling a flying drone). I also don't like that close to the and of the game we're not seeking for evidence in a non-linear facion, but are set on a straigt path and only thing that slows our move forward is daunting minigames. Still 5/5. Why? It (the game) kept me excited the whole time.

Fantastic Story

State of Mind has a very good story; good graphics; a great world and great characters. It’s puzzles are where it falls short. Luckily the majority of the puzzles aren’t bad or even difficult. It has 2 puzzles I disliked but they weren’t difficult so much as they were tedious. The story as mentioned was one of the strong points as you try to piece together your past in order to find your family. One thing I will say is few games have made me dislike the main character as much of State of Mind made me dislike Richard Nolan. I have played as characters that cut old ladies throats for a few coins and I found more I liked about them then I did Richard. I’m not sure if this was intentional or not, if it was then bravo I say. He was just a child like man who spends more time looking for his family then he asks why he is doing it or if he even deserves them. He treats his friends poorly; never accepts blame; is just an all around dbag. The only times he showed a little humility or kindness was the few times I was allowed to choose a dialogue choice that gave that to him. Again, if intentional then that is well done. The dialogue is well done and the choices at least give me the feeling of having decent control over most of the story. The characters were interesting and made me want to get to know them better. Lydia was not only my favourite but had a very memorable scene where you take control of her as a VR cam-girl for a scene. It was genuinely creepy like few other scenes in games. The graphics has a great style to them that was like a mishmash of cell shaded graphics and realism. The people and clothing were mainly cell shaded but the world detail was mainly in a realistic style and it made for an interesting blend. The world detail was very good as homes felt lived in and the city felt alive usually. The voice acting was also well done.
